1SOUTHERN RAILWAY double-sided ENAMEL STATION DIRECTION SIGN: “Railway Station Through Queen Street” with pointing arrow. From the street leading to Exeter Queen Street station opened by the LSWR in July 1860, renamed Exeter Central by the SR on 1st July 1933. Green and white enamel, 20” x 15¼” complete with original hanging bracket. A little face and edge chipping but a rare example nonetheless.£520
2BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “W.G. Bagnall Ltd. Engineers, Stafford, England No. 2665” as carried by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Huntingdon Electric Co., Little Barford Power Station, St Neots, 0-4-0ST outside cylinder Loco ex works December 1942 named “GENERAL WADE HAYES.” By March 1943 the loco had been transferred to Stourport Power Station, where it remained, ownership changing only through Nationalisation and reorganisation. The loco was scrapped in February 1968. Oval, 8” x 5¼”, unrestored.£240
3SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 73126 as carried by the BR Standard class 5MT 4-6-0 locomotive built at Derby in July 1956. Delivered new to Shrewsbury, where it stayed until September 1958, when transferred to Patricroft until withdrawal in April 1968, and cut up by A. Draper at Hull. Front restored some time ago, ex-loco back.£500
4MIDLAND & SOUTH WESTERN JUNCTION RAILWAY MR small pattern three-aspect HANDLAMP stamped “80” and brass plated “A. Teal” on the reducing cone. The legend “M&SWJR” and “139” are picked out in cream paint on the body side. The reservoir is also marked “M&SWJR” and is complete with burner and reflector.£300
5TOTEM: WIDNEY MANOR. BR (W) fully-flanged chocolate and cream in good condition overall with good colour but shine a little flat. An ex-GWR West Midlands station between Solihull and Knowle & Dorridge opened July 1899.£450
6GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY CAST-IRON NOTICE: “The Owners and Drivers of Locomotives and Other Ponderous Vehicles …. (plus eight lines of text).” Kings Cross, dated 1883. 26½” x 17¾” totally unrestored. Unusual wording.£120
7BRASS-FACED SINGLE-LINE TABLET: “Linton – Haverhill 18” (the latter re-engraved when the section was lengthened). From the ex-GER line from Shelford – Long Melford which closed in March 1967. Good, ex-section condition.£400
8SHEDPLATE: 88A CARDIFF (CATHAYS) (1950 – December 1957) RADYR (CARDIFF) (December 1957 – January 1961, later 88B) CANTON (CARDIFF) (from 86C, January 1961 – September 1962, later 86A). The loco number “92233” has been chalked on the back. A BR Standard Cl 9F 2-10-0 built at Crewe to Order E497 new to Pontypool Road in August 1958. Allocated to a number of South Wales depots in 1958-64, the loco spent nearly two years at 88A (Jan 1961-Dec 1962) before migrating north to Carlisle Kingmoor and finally Speke Junction where withdrawn in February 1968. Together with a cast-iron “SC” (Self Cleaning) plate. Both items in ex-loco condition. (2)£200
9LNER CAST-IRON SEATBACK: FANGFOSS. 27” x 4¼” with rounded ends. Good, unrestored condition with faint traces of green paint. An ex-NER station on the York – Market Weighton line opened in October 1847, closed January 1959.£500
10TOTEM: LEICESTER CENTRAL. BR (M) fully-flanged maroon. Minor edge rusting, otherwise very good condition with deep colour and shine. An ex-GCR station opened 15th March 1899 on completion of the “London Extension” but sadly closed on 5th May 1969. A highly desirable but scarce totem, seldom seen at auction.£1500
11BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “LMS Rebuilt Derby.” Believed to be from ex-MR Johnson designed 4-4-0 class 60 loco numbered 2591 when built by Neilson Reid in 1901 works No. 5781. Rebuilt with new frames and cylinders at Derby in 1914. Became LMS 553 class 2P and BR 40553 in June 1948. Allocated to and withdrawn from Nottingham in December 1958. The number “40553” is chalked on the back. Oval 10¼” x 6”, face restored only some time ago.£140
12SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 80028 as carried by the BR Standard class 4MT 2-6-4T loco built at Brighton to order No. BR 3621 delivered to Kittybrewster January 1952 and stayed there until June 1961 when transferred to Ardrossan, Hurlford, Stranraer and finally Perth in 1964. Withdrawn from Perth in September 1966 and cut up by G.H. Campbell, Airdrie in December that year. Repainted front and back.£875
13BRASS LOCOMOTIVE CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: “Mashonaland Railway Co. Ld. 38,” as carried by class 7 4-8-0 loco built by North British Loco Co. works number 16092 of 1903 to work on the Kalomo – Broken Hill section of the 3 ft 6 in gauge Mashonaland Railway in Northern Rhodesia. Withdrawn in 1938 and sold to the Zambesi Sawmills on their railway system in Zambia. Taken out of service in 1954 for major overhaul and never used again. Oval, 19” x 13¾”, face lightly polished only.£500
14BR (M) ENAMEL SIGNALBOX NAMEBOARD: VICTORIA SOUTH. Maroon with white lettering, fully-flanged. 96” x 12” colour a little flat and a few repaired edge chips, good otherwise. From the signalbox to the south end of Nottingham Victoria station, opened in May 1900, closed September 1967. Victoria South was a GCR Non-Standard design fitted with a Railway Signal Company Tappet frame.£1000
15TOTEM: HERNE BAY. BR (S) fully-flanged green. Edge rusting and chips, good colour and shine otherwise. An ex-SE&CR station on the Kent Coast between Whitstable and Margate opened in July 1861 as Herne Bay and Hampton-on-Sea, renamed in 1951.£600
16ENAMEL STREET DIRECTION SIGN: “British Railways (in totem) Station” with left pointing arrow. BR (M) maroon with white lettering. 21” x 10½”, one small edge chip, colour a little flat but OK.£200
17GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY (stamped on base) wood-cased, single-needle, non-pegging BLOCK INSTRUMENT which has been converted from a peg-and-chain mechanism, the wooden handle from which is retained. With original outside terminals and has the large GNR engraved brass location plate “To St James Deeping.” It is also stamped “1105” on front edge of base. VGC. Much less-common than the NER examples. From Littleworth signal box, on the Werrington Junction – Spalding line, a GNR Type 1 design opened in 1875 fitted with a 30-lever McKenzie & Holland 1873 patent frame.£300

19BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “The Vulcan Foundry (Limited), Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire No. 4767, 1936” as carried by LMS Stanier 8F 2-8-0 loco numbered 8090 when built. Renumbered 48090 at Nationalisation. Allocated to Northampton until January 1963, then at Mold Junction, Chester, Buxton. Withdrawn April 1968 from Bolton and cut up by John Cashmore, Great Bridge in July 1968. Oval, 9” x 5¼” face lightly polished only.£280
20TOTEM: CHAPEL-EN-LE-FRITH CENTRAL. BR (M) fully-flanged maroon with “Central” appearing in the lower panel. A couple of minor surface scratches, but overall very good condition with deep colour and shine. An ex-MR Derbyshire station between Chinley and Peak Forest opened in February 1867, closed March 1967. Seen only once before at auction, this totem is keenly sought after.£2100
21BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WHISTLE from the 60 cm gauge 0-10-0T built by Berliner Maschinenbau AG (Vorm L. Schartzkopff) Berlin Germany in 1928 works No. 9316 for the Sragi Sugar Mill of Java, Indonesia as their number “V” [5]. 16½” long and 5” diameter whistle barrel. Good, ex-loco condition.£400
22LMS SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 180. As carried by the class 3P (later class 3) 2-6-2T loco built at Derby in April 1938 to Lot 139. Became 40180 at Nationalisation. A Monument Lane and Aston engine for a long time, it strayed to Nuneaton and Willesden in 1960, before returning to Aston for withdrawal in January 1962. The plate was rescued from Horwich works when the loco was undergoing overhaul and renumbering. Totally original, unrestored condition. A rare survivor.£500
23BRASS 9” X 5” LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “London & North Eastern Railway 4562 N.B. Loco Co. 1918,” as carried by ex-NBR class B 0-6-0, NBR 158, built by the North British Loco Company’s Atlas Works as works No. 21931 in July 1918. Designed by Reid, these engines were employed on freight workings. Became LNER 9158 Class J37 in April 1925; 4562 in September 1946; BR 64562 in March 1949. A longtime St Margarets loco, it was withdrawn in November 1963 and cut up at Inverurie in May 1964. Ex-loco condition.£200
24COLLECTION OF 24 CAST-IRON SIGNALBOX LEVER DESCRIPTION PLATES. An interesting selection including “MS&L Up Main, MS&L Dist From P’Form & Bay, LN&W-W Up Main, L&NW-W Up & Sdgs,” etc. In total 10 with references to MS&L and 10 L&NW. Reputed to be all from the same signalbox, most likely in the Manchester London Road area. All have been mounted on a modern wooden board.£550
25BRASS INDUSTRIAL NAMEPLATE: ‘MONTY’ as carried by the 0-6-0ST inside cylinder loco built by Hunslet works No. 3692 in 1950 and delivered to NCB Haydock Colliery. Later transferred to Sutton Manor Colliery and then to Cronton Colliery and appears to have spent all its life working between the three locations. Scrapped in June 1973 at Cronton by Mee & Cocker Ltd. 29” x 5½” unrestored. A little pitting to the lettering, good otherwise.£1350
26LMSR 12” dial non-fusee roundhead OFFICE CLOCK with the initials “LMS” and the number “21912” on the face. From the Administration Office at Carlisle (Citadel). Restored to VGC and in good working order.N/S
27CAST-IRON TRESPASS SIGN: “Great Southern & Western Railway – Notice Pursuant …. (seven lines of text) …. By Order. Francis S. Ormsby Secretary (undated). 18¾” x 13¾”. Front restored some time ago, the back in primer. The company was incorporated in August 1844 and built lines between Dublin – Cork and branches. It was grouped into the Great Southern Railway in November 1924.£80
28ALUMINIUM SINGLE-LINE TABLET: “Long Sutton – Gedney 21” a section on the Spalding No.1 to Sutton Bridge line which was closed on 5th April 1965. Long Sutton signal box was a MR Type 2a design opened in 1922 and was closed in 1965 and prior to that had previously been in use at Kingston's Siding from 1899 until 1920. Gedney signal box was a M&GN Type 1a design opened in 1897, closed in 1964. Well used condition.£120
29GWR ROYAL HOTEL silverplate CAKE AND SANDWICH TRAY manufactured by Elkington. 10¾” x 7½” tray standing on ball feet. Central handle rising to 7½” high with dividers providing one large section for sandwiches and two smaller sections for cakes. Coat-of-arms incised on the tray. The hotel, an integral part of Paddington station in London, was opened in June 1854 originally with 103 bedrooms and 15 sitting rooms and was “the finest in London”; later additions increased capacity to 250 bedrooms. The hotel was sold by the BRB in 1983 and still operates today, recently having been refurbished.£220
30TOTEM: HANWELL. BR (W) fully-flanged chocolate and cream, basically ex-station condition, the cream- coloured parts somewhat darkened and a small chip between the two letter “L’s”, good otherwise. An ex-GWR London area station on the West of England main line out of Paddington opened in 1838 and named Hanwell & Elthorne between April 1896 – May 1974.£550
31BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Saechs, Maschinenfabrik Vorm Rich. Hartmann, Actien – Gesellschaft. 1912 Chemnitz No. 3548” as carried by 60 cm gauge 0-8-0T built for the State Railways of Java as No. 1012, designed for use on feeder lines. Later numbered 202T. Subsequently operated at Sragi sugar mill as No. 12 into the 1990s. Rectangular 14½” x 7”. Score mark to front, unrestored. The whistle from this loco is also available at lot 429.£260
32CALEDONIAN RAILWAY COMPANY original gold-leaf coat-of-arms transfer mounted on a 24” x 24” board showing the locomotive livery of light blue with white and black lining. The company was incorporated in July 1845 and grouped into the LMSR 1st January 1923. Slight surface scratching in the blue painted background, VGC otherwise.£70

34SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 92032 as carried by the BR Standard class 9F 2-10-0 loco built at Crewe in November 1954 to Order E489. Originally an ER loco at New England, migration to the LMR at Annesley took place in May 1957, and later Birkenhead from where withdrawn in April 1967. Scrapped at Cashmore’s, Great Bridge in October 1967. Unrestored, ex-loco condition.£980
35LMS “HAWKSEYE” ALUMINIUM STATION SIGN: KINGSBURY. 48” x 18” the front repainted in red and white, back untouched. An ex-MR station between Water Orton and Tamworth opened in August 1839, closed in March 1968.£400
36CARRIAGE PRINT: WARE, HERTFORDSHIRE by Claude Muncaster from the LNER post-war series (1945-47). A very scarce print of the River Lee and maltings close to the ex-GER Hertford line. In an original type glazed wooden frame and in good condition.£150
37MIDLAND RAILWAY three-aspect small HANDLAMP with very unusual small domed cap and expansion cone. Brass plated on reducing cone “Midland Railway Co For Petroleum Only” and Midland Railway 13836B”. The body side is stamped “MRCo.” Reservoir stamped MR, LMS burner and reflector. All glasses intact and brass-rimmed bevel-edged front lens. VGC.£160
38BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd. 7525 Beyer-Garratt Locomotive British Patents 647476-647480 etc., Rhodesian Patents 137/47 etc., South African Patents 2866/47 etc & Foreign Patents – Manchester 1953” as carried by Rhodesian Railways 3ft 6in gauge 2-8-2+2-8-2 Garratt of class 16A no. 647. Later National Railways of Zimbabwe no. 614. Oval, 10½” x 6½”, face restored, two dents following a life of service.£250
39CAST-IRON NOTICE: “Engines Must Not Pass Over This Weighbridge” with the GNR/LNER casting reference O.117. 28½” x 17½” faithfully restored front and back. An unusual sign, probably from a goods depot in the Spalding area.£170
40TOTEM: ST ANNES. BR (M) fully-flanged maroon. A few expertly repaired chips, good colour and shine. An ex-L&YR station originally named Cross Slack when opened by the Preston & Wyre Railway in November 1873, renamed in January 1875.£500
LOTS 41-44: PULLMAN CAR ITEMS
41PULLMAN CAR BRASS TABLE LAMP in the classical Arcadian style of swags and rams heads. No identity of car, but is of an earlier pattern and used in older cars of 1910 - 1923 vintage. Fitted with a Perspex shade which has seen better days, but original. Otherwise, the lamp is in good condition.£480
42PULLMAN CAR CLOCK with 7” dial as fitted into the bulkhead of certain of the Parlour Cars. 7½” dial, the face with Arabic numerals engraved into stainless steel face with further engraved decoration around the centre. The bevel-edged front glass is set into a chromed brass bezel. No company car name discernable. The clock has been mounted (offset) into a turned wooden base. Good working order (although no key).£1300
43PULLMAN CAR BRASS TABLE LAMP. As lot 41 above but with no shade. Together with an 8½” tall “Torpedo” style wall lamp in brass again with no shade. Both items in good condition. (2)£950
44PULLMAN CAR WOODEN PLAQUE: CAR MEDUSA. 8¾” in diameter white-painted wood plaque with gold-leaf transfer showing the Pullman coat-of-arms and the car name. From the car built as a Kitchen Car in 1924 by the Midland Carriage & Wagon Co. The plaque was installed in c.1950 when the bulkhead clock it replaced was removed. Withdrawn in September 1963 and sold to Taylor Bros., Manchester, for scrap in January 1964. The car worked in “The Golden Arrow” for a number of years after WWII. Slight cracking and edge flaking of the white paint, but a rare item nevertheless.£1750
45TOTEM: WHITSTABLE & TANKERTON. BR (S) fully-flanged green with black surround. One small chip on the inner white border otherwise very good with deep colour and shine. An ex-SE&CR station on the North Kent Coast opened in January 1915.£680
46CAST-IRON WAGON REGISTRATION PLATE: “Registered by the N.B. Ry. Coy. 1909 To Carry 12 Tons 21373.” 10¼” x 8” face restored.£60
47BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “Montreal Locomotive Works Limited – Builders Montreal Canada 76343 1948” as carried by Indian State Railways 5ft 6 in gauge 2-8-2 No. 8125 of class CWD. Rectangular with rounded corners, 15” x 8”, lettering a little pitted. Repainted with red background, back ex-loco condition.£360
48ALUMINIUM SINGLE-LINE KEY TOKEN: “Talerddig – Machynlleth” From the ex-Cambrian line from Shrewsbury and Caersws opened in June 1861. Good ex-section condition with traces of red paint. The Talerddig to Machynlleth token section came into being on 17th March 1984 when Cemmes Road signal box was closed, and ceased to exist in October 1988 when the line was converted from Electric Token to Radio Electric Token Block. Talerddig signal box was a McKenzie & Holland Type 1 design opened in 1874 for the Cambrian Railways. When closed on 21st October 1988 it was fitted with an 18 lever GWR Vertical Tappet 5-Bar frame. Machynlleth signal box was opened in 1960 and is still a British Railways Western Region Type 37a design fitted with a 50 lever GWR Vertical Tappet 5-Bar frame.£65
49CARRIAGE PRINT: SCHIEHALLION, NEAR KINLOCH RANNOCH, PERTHSHIRE by W. Douglas Macleod from the Scottish Region series issued 1956-57. A view of the loch with mountains, some snow-capped, rising beyond. In an original type glazed wooden frame. VGC.£120
50ALUMINIUM LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: WILD BOAR FELL as carried by the BR class 60 Co-Co 3,100HP diesel-electric locomotive numbered 60019. Built at Brush Traction Co. Loughborough, works No. 921 and entered service on 3rd December 1990. The loco was named at Brush Traction before entering traffic with the Trainload Freight sector. The name was removed in May 1996. The loco is still in service with English Welsh and Scottish Railway. Wild Boar Fell is in the Pennine range near Kirkby Stephen. Measuring 52” x 10”, the plate is in very good ex-loco condition. One of the better and more desirable class 60 names. Paperwork accompanies.N/S

Leicester Central was an ex-GCR station opened 15th March 1899 on completion of the “London Extension” but sadly closed on 5th May 1969£150
72CAST-IRON CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: 5604 as carried by the ex-GWR 0-6-2T “5600” class loco built at Swindon in January 1925 to Lot 228. Allocated to Landore, Duffryn Yard and finally Llanelly. Withdrawn in November 1962 and cut up by R.S. Hayes at Bridgend. Repainted front and back.£680

84MANCHESTER SHEFFIELD & LINCOLNSHIRE RAILWAY wood-cased, single-needle, Tyer’s sloping-front permissive BLOCK INSTRUMENT with its original metal plunger, leaf-mechanism. The permissive mechanism is somewhat worn, but still functional. The wooden case is stamped “MS&LRy” twice. The ivorine plates, engraved “Up Line” and “Clipstone Sidings” and the brass Tyer’s makers plate are not original to the instrument, but are typical of the type. Clean, VGC. Clipstone Sidings was located between Warsop and Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire.£180

100LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: COLDSTREAM GUARDSMAN as carried by the LMS 6100 “Royal Scot” class 6P-7P 4-6-0 locomotive originally numbered 6114. Built at the North British Locomotive Company Queens Park Works Glasgow, works No. 23609 in September 1927. The name had been fitted to the locomotive by April 1928 apparently without ceremony. Rebuilt with a No. 2A boiler and double-chimney in 1946 and renumbered 46114 at Nationalisation. A long-time Edge Hill (Liverpool) loco, transfers to Llandudno Junction, Holyhead and Willesden, took place in 1961-1963. Withdrawn from service 28th September 1963. The cast brass plate, which has been lightly face polished only, is some 52” long and in excellent order. One of the best “Royal Scot” class names to be found. 103MANCHESTER SHEFFIELD & LINCOLNSHIRE RAILWAY POCKET WATCH engraved on rear “M.S. & L.Ry., AN6, 77” inside are the initials “TRA” and the number “43369.” A white face with Roman numerals, second hand, the initials “MS&LRy” and the makers name “Adkins & Sons Coventry.” The watch is wound by a key which has the number “6” embossed and is attached to the watch by twine. The MS&LR was formed by the amalgamation of smaller companies on 1st January 1847. The company was renamed “Great Central Railway” on 1st August 1897 and grouped into the LNER on 1st January 1923. Appears to be in full working order. Very rare.£1250

The bracket at the rear was engaged beside the water level gauge glass in the driver’s cab. Complete with reservoir and burner both marked “GCR” and reflector. The instrument originated from Truro East signal box which is still a GWR Type 7a design opened in 1899 and currently fitted with a 54 lever GWR Vertical Tappet 5-Bar frame. Unfortunately, the leather is badly torn from the top to about ⅓ down the front. Nevertheless an extremely rare survivor from this much admired stretch of narrow gauge (1’ 11½”) railway.£1800

A one-time Lincoln engine, the latter days were spent at Leicester from where withdrawn in November 1961 and cut up at Darlington. Face restored only.£130

Renumbered 47001 in February 1974 class 47/0 and unofficially named “CITY OF BRISTOL.” Withdrawn in November 1986 and donated by BREL to Crewe Heritage Centre arriving there in April 1988 for preservation eventually becoming derelict. In November 1993 the loco went to Booth Roe Metals Ltd for scrap and cut up in January 1994. Oval, 9½” x 5¾” in original BR blue. Repaired at right-hand side bolthole.£150

189SOUTH EASTERN & CHATHAM RAILWAY long-case PLATFORM CLOCK. A magnificent John Walker-manufactured 24” face clock in mahogany case, measuring a full 90” high, 16½” wide at the pendulum case, 27” wide at the top and up to 10” deep. The case is stamped “1616SE,” in at least two places which matches the number on the clock face. The face has been re-lettered “SR” and has had “24 hour” numbers added in red on two separate occasions. Appears to be in good working order with pendulum, winder and counterweight all being present. The clock originated from Margate station in Kent and is in virtually ex-station condition.£1200

193GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY unusual small pattern three-aspect HANDLAMP stamped “GNR14672” in the reducing cone and base and also “GNR A 12/96” in the reducing cone which is also plated “Petroleum.” The integral vessel fills the area of the base and the drum has therefore to turn above this vessel which is quite difficult. There is also a very short copper lens cone. The base is brass plated: “Great Northern Railway Company Woodwalton Sig. Box 3.” All glasses intact. Original condition. Wood Walton is a location on the East Coast Main line between Abbots Ripton and Connington. There were a total of three signal boxes at the location. The first was opened by the GNR in 1892 and was closed by the LNER in the mid-1920s.  In the late 1950s/early 1960s there were two temporary BR boxes in connection with track repairs. The first of these opened in May 1957, was taken out of use from 25th March 1962 and was closed in September 1962. The second temporary box was opened on 25th March 1962 and was closed on 7th September 1962.£420

200LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: COMBE MARTIN from the Southern Railway “West Country” class 4-6-2 “Pacific” loco originally numbered 21C143 when built at Brighton in October 1946. Renumbered 34043 by BR in September 1948 and withdrawn from service in September 1963. The loco ran 749,112 miles in service. A long-time Bournemouth based loco, it was often to be seen working on the Somerset & Dorset Joint Line. Restored front a long time ago, back ex-loco, the nameplate measures some 75” long x 11¼” at its widest, the scroll 30¼” x 2¾. The town of Combe Martin is a small seaside town on the North Devon coast between Ilfracombe and Lynton, never served by rail.£16000

205NORTH BRITISH RAILWAY HORSEBRASS: J&P CAMERON N.B. RAILWAY COMPANY incised on an oval-shaped brass measuring 2½” x 2” (Hawthorne plate 153). J.& P. Cameron were established as general carriers in Glasgow in 1823. By 1845 they were carriers to the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway. In 1880 the company was purchased outright by the NBR although the original name was retained. The name continued to be used even after grouping until in 1926 the LNER decided to put all carting arrangements under their own name. One of the fixing pins on the back is missing, a little wear to the lettering, VGC otherwise.£85

214BURRY PORT & GWENDREATH VALLEY RAILWAY COMMEMORATIVE KEY “Presented to Mrs A, Morgan, Burry Port, on the occasion of the Opening of the Goods Depot Ponthenry, May 2nd 1904. Llafur A LLwyddiant.” The Welsh motto translates: “Labour and Success.” Mrs Morgan was the wife of the General Manager of the BP&GVR. The key is silver, hallmarked Birmingham 1903/4 and is in the original fitted, lined case and in VGC. Incorporated as the Kidwelly & Burry Port Railway in July 1865, the name was changed before the opening of the line in 1869. The railway was grouped into the GWR in January 1922.£220

A Blaydon, then long-time Gateshead allocation it was withdrawn from Haymarket in December 1962 and cut up at Darlington. Unrestored.£320
225ALUMINIUM LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: WESTMINSTER ABBEY as carried by BR Bo-Bo 2,250HP diesel-electric HST power car number 43027 built at Crewe to lot 30876 (coaching stock series) and delivered to BR in September 1976, entering traffic as set 253013 (class 253) at St Philips Marsh (Bristol) in October that year. It was re-designated class 43 (loco class) in 1988 (set numbers being virtually abandoned). It was named “WESTMINSTER ABBEY” on 29th May 1985 at Paddington by the Very Reverend Edward Carpenter, Dean of Westminster Abbey. It received accident damage at Old Oak Common in January 1990 and was sent to Doncaster Works for repairs, where the nameplates were removed. The name “GLORIOUS DEVON” was bestowed on 25th April 1994 at Plymouth station. Still in service with First Great Western. The plate measures 34½” x 9” and is in good, ex-loco condition.£2000

A long-time Newton Heath engine it was withdrawn from Rose Grove in October 1964 and cut up by W. Smith of Ecclesfield in March 1965. Completely unrestored, ex-loco condition. 250LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: DUNCAN being from the right-hand side of the LMS 4-6-0 “Jubilee” class 5XP-6P locomotive originally numbered 5674 when built at Crewe, works No. 272 in December 1935. Naming took place in April 1937. Renumbered 45674 by BR in June 1948 and withdrawn from service in October 1964. When built the loco had a 4,000 gallon tender with high curved top. A long-time Crewe (North) engine, it was transferred to Saltley in March 1963. The cast brass plate measures 29” long and is in ex-loco condition. Should appeal to anyone with the same name or those wanting a neat, handy size, nameplate to fill a small gap on the wall.£8000

Willesden remains an important junction for the North London, West London and connections onto the Great Western Main Line, served by local trains from Euston and LU Bakerloo Line. Complete with all glasses intact, reservoir stamped “GNR”, burner and reflector. Brass-rimmed, bevel-edged front glass. Algarkirk, a GNR station, opened in 1850, closed in September 1961; Yarmouth Vauxhall, a GER station, opened in 1844, still open today.£280

It was built to a MR design and was fitted with a 41 lever Midland Railway Tappet frame. It closed on 26 May 1968.£340

275LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: JOYOUS GARD as fitted to the BR Standard class 5 loco numbered 73088 built at Derby. The loco entered service in September 1955 at Stewarts Lane (London). Named in May 1961 without ceremony following the withdrawal of the SR “King Arthur” class, the name (but not this plate) originally being carried by loco number 30741. Allocated to Stewarts Lane until May 1958, then Nine Elms until October 1965, finally Guildford. Withdrawn from service in October 1966, the loco was cut up by John Cashmore at Newport in June 1967. Measuring only 29½” long, the plate is of cast brass and in very good ex-loco condition. Surely one of the better class names.£6000

277LMSR SIGNALBOX NAMEBOARD: ROWSLEY UP SIDINGS. Wood, 89½” x 10½” restored in maroon with white painted metal letters some time ago. Rowsley, situated between Matlock and Buxton, was an important staging point for freight trains through the ex-MR Peak District, also boasting its own loco depot (see Lot 466). The passenger service ceased in March 1967 and much of the freight was re-routed or lost to rail completely. Rowsley Up Sidings box was opened by BR on 7th September 1952 and signalled trains on the Up Goods line between Rowsley South Junction and Rowsley North Junction signal boxes. It was closed 4th May 1964 although there was an earlier signal box at the location that opened on 2nd May 1892.£500

Withdrawn in March 1975, the last of the class to be withdrawn. Sold for preservation and moved to Didcot in July 1975. Took part in the Open Days at Cathays and Bristol in June 1991 then moved to WSR Minehead for preservation the following month. 12¾” x 5¼” in good ex-loco condition.£500

281BRASS SHIPBUILDERS PLATE: “No. 1258 Turbine Steamer ‘Slieve More’ Built By Denny – Dumbarton 1932.” This was an LMSR 310ft length, 44ft 6ins beam, 13ft draught, CL type coal-fired turbine steamer with a gross tonnage of 1408 tons, built for the Holyhead – Dun Laoghaire route, but in the event actually worked Dublin – Greenore. She had the capacity for 623 cattle and a maximum speed of 16 knots. She was scrapped in 1966. “Slieve More” is the third highest peak in the Sligo mountains and the 282nd highest in Ireland! Oval, engraved lettering, 17¾” x 12”, a few scrapes and knocks. Builders plates from railway owned steamers are rare.£900

An ex-GER Lea Valley Line station between Tottenham Hale and Cheshunt opened in 1855 as Ordnance Factory, renamed in April 1886. Some timetables referred to this station as “Enfield Lock for Enfield Highway.” Special.£500

293CAST-IRON LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “American Locomotive Company 71405 Schenectady Works June 1944” as carried by USA Transportation Corps metre gauge 2-8-2 No. 611, allocated to the Bengal –Assam Railway, India as their No. 1092, but was probably used for spare parts where the worksplate - attached to the boiler, was fitted to another locomotive of the same class and subsequently operated by the Indian State Railways. The design was known as the “MacArthur” after the American general. Rectangular, 14” x 7½” with the number L6214 cast into the back. Totally ex-loco condition.£200
294NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY wooden-cased, single-needle BLOCK INSTRUMENT with the peg-and-chain pegging mechanism replaced by an LNER rotary example. Clearly stamped “NER” it also has an LNER test label dated 12/1/1938. Plenty of ingrained dust and “Brasso” on this example! The original NER brass plates are engraved “Down Line” and the other, very well rubbed: “From South Cabin” which is behind the glass and much smaller. Very good original condition. How many “South Cabins” did the NER have? York certainly had one!£150
295SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 61668 as carried by the ex-LNER B17/4 class 4-6-0 loco originally numbered 2868 and named “BRADFORD CITY” when built at Robert Stephenson Works No. 4130 entering traffic in April 1937. Renumbered 1668 in June 1946 and rebuilt to class B17/6 in June 1949 when also renumbered 61668. A Stratford and Colchester based engine, the last of the B17s in service. Withdrawn from Stratford in August 1960 and cut up there. Restored with red painted background front, black back. Smokebox numberplates from B17 “Footballers” are very, very, rare; only three or four are known to have survived.£2500

Rebuilt to class “V3” in April 1958. Allocated to St Margarets, alternating between Parkhead and Hurlford from December 1960 until withdrawn in December 1962 from Hurlford and cut up at Darlington. Unrestored.£200
300LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: KING GEORGE VI. Being the left-hand name plate as carried by the GWR “King” class 4-6-0 loco number 6028 built at Swindon in July 1930 to Lot 267. The loco originally carried the name “KING HENRY II” when new, but was renamed “KING GEORGE VI” in January 1937 to commemorate the succession of the then new king. An experimental speedometer was fitted in 1934 but soon removed. A double chimney was fitted in January 1957. Allocated to Old Oak Common until August 1960 when the loco spent a short time at Canton (Cardiff) before returning to Old Oak Common in July 1962. Withdrawal from service took place in November 1962 and after spells of storage at Old Oak and Southall was finally moved to South Wales for scrapping by Birds of Risca in June 1964. The plate is in absolutely ex-loco condition, some 69½” in length and hardly touched since bought by the vendor from Swindon Works in 1963 for £15, plus 3/4d carriage to his nearest station. Receipts and correspondence accompany the lot. A highly desirable nameplate which will have many associations for enthusiasts.£40500

Ltd Moira 1934” as carried by the Moira Colliery Co 0-4-0ST outside cylinder loco named “NEW CHURCH GRESLEY.” Originally built by Manning Wardle works No. 1512 in 1900 and rebuilt at Moira in 1934. Transferred to NCB ownership in January 1947 and scrapped there in 1952. At some time the last two figures of the date have been ground off and “34” engraved in their place. An unusual Langdon wooden-cased BLOCK INSTRUMENT converted at some point from pegging to non-pegging, witnessed by the filled-in markings around the commutator position and overall dimensions of the instrument. It is stamped “MR” (twice) and 1900 (once), and has two MR test labels one with the date “19/10/1917.” Lock at rear. The LMS brass plates are engraved “Olney” and “Down Line”. A very rare instrument in VGC. From the ex-MR Northampton – Bedford line closed to passengers in March 1962.£150

Loco loaned to the GCR July – September 1919 when returned to ROD and stored at Stratton until August 1921 and returned to service. Purchased by the GWR in May 1925 becoming 3090 and later 3041 entering GWR stock in February 1927. Withdrawn in March 1958. Diamond shaped, the number “3041” stamped into rear. 13” x 5½”, unrestored.£380
313LNWR. Two steel-cased green painted STATION LAMPS from SHAP. 7½” x 11½” at base expanding to 10” x 11½” at top. 15½” to top of case and 23” to top of chimney with carrying handle on top. Each has three glass windows (one broken in one example), the front opening to reveal burner with cracked reflector and complete with fluted glass in one example, the other has no interior lamp. Both have the station name “Shap” painted on the front glass. Both are ex-station condition. From the station near the summit of the long drag from Tebay, where the banking engines were detached; a scene remembered by the many thousands of enthusiasts who gathered there in the twilight of steam. The station closed on 1st July 1968 a few days before the end of main line steam. (2)£2600

315GREAT EASTERN RAILWAY 12” dial single-fusee wooden-cased OFFICE CLOCK with the initials “GER” clearly stamped in the back box (twice) and once in the back of the surround. The face was repainted by BR with Arabic numerals and 24 hour numbers added in red, the clock number “898” is also present. Once allocated to the “Abercorn Rooms” in the GER Hotel Liverpool Street, the vendor bought it from the old Station Managers Office on the station prior to demolition for station reconstruction in 1988. The pendulum and winder are both present and the clock is in good working order.N/S

Renumbered 20002 class 20 in September 1974 under the TOPS renumbering scheme. Withdrawn from Immingham in February 1988 and sent to Thomas Hill Kilnhurst in May for possible refurbishment to new type of industrial shunter. The idea was abandoned. Went to Doncaster in July 1989 and eventually MC Metal Processing Glasgow for scrapping in October that year. Rectangular chromed brass, 10” x 4½”, ex-loco condition.£480

445GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY STYLE ENAMEL SIGNALBOX NAMEBOARD: SCOPWICK. 27” x 6” white lettering on blue enamel with chips around screwholes and two very large ones affecting the letters “O” and “I”. Located on the GN&GE Joint Line between Sleaford and Lincoln, the station opened in August 1882 named Scopwick & Timberland and was closed by BR in November 1955. The line is still in use today. Although not in the best of condition, a rare survivor.£100

Engraved plates of this type were carried by 2-6-2Ts Nos. 71 – 144 which were built at Derby in that year. Oval, 10½” x 6” face lightly polished and repainted some time ago. The back has been cleaned, but shows the tell-tale signs of being carried.£100

A long-time Kirkby-in-Ashfield engine from where it was withdrawn in August 1965 and cut up at Buttigegs Newport by February 1966.£190

Appears to have been replated a long time ago. The LC&DR was renamed from the East Kent Railway in August 1859. In 1899 it was worked by a Management committee formed in conjunction with the South Eastern Railway, later to become the South Eastern & Chatham Railway. The company was grouped into the SR in 1923.£25

478GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY small rectangular COACH TAIL LAMP as used on the company’s Delivery Vehicles. Clearly stamped “GWR” in the curved top. The front with brass-rimmed red lens lifts open (wire catch on each side) to reveal a copper reservoir stamped “GWR” with similarly marked burner and reflector. One side has a small clear lens, the other a larger clear lens. The back has a lamp bracket with screw arrangement to ensure lamp does not shake loose in traffic. Original condition.£160

The service ceased on 18th April 1966 when the route was truncated at Keswick. The resultant branch line service was withdrawn on 6th March 1972. Fully 12 feet long with some flaking of lettering, but basically in ex-carriage condition.£70
