This loco suffered two derailments in 1927 at Wrotham and Bearsted in Kent. Trials were carried out using the LNER dynamometer car with HN Gresley in attendance on the footplate and a speed of 83mph was reached between St Neots and Huntingdon. It was concluded that the relatively high tanks on the loco, especially when only part-full. set up oscillations caused by the imperfections of poorly ballasted track on the SR (ex-SER section) made worse by a very wet summer. All of the “K1” class were subsequently rebuilt as 2-6-0 tender engines. Loco A890 was thus rebuilt at Ashford in June 1928 and became the prototype for the “U1” class, the building of which commenced in June 1931 at Eastleigh. Consequently A890 became 1890 in 1931 under the SR renumbering scheme and 31890 at Nationalisation. Withdrawn in June 1963 from Brighton, having been at Bricklayers Arms and Three Bridges.
