1ENAMEL POSTERBOARD HEADING: “CLOGHER VALLEY RAILWAY” 23” x 7” in blue with white lettering with deep colour and shine although a little edge chipping and rusting. The manufacturer’s name “Falkirk Iron Co., Falkirk” is present in one corner. The company was registered as a tramway in 1883, but the title was later changed. The 3’ 0” gauge line from Tynan – Maguiresbridge in County Armagh opened in 1887, but closed on 31st December 1941. A rare survivor.£1900
2CAST IRON TRESPASS NOTICE: “MIDLAND RAILWAY L.T. & S. SECTION … (plus ten lines of text), June 1906, Alexis Charles, Secretary.” This modified MR 1906 casting pattern was used even though the LT&SR was not taken over by the MR until August 1912. 26¾” x 21½” in ex-lineside condition.£550
3BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “WALKERS LIMITED MARYBOROUGH No. 101 1909” as carried by 3ft 6in gauge Queensland Government Railways 4-6-0 No. 456 of class PB-15. Withdrawn 1959. Oval, 12⅝” x 9¾” the front restored some time ago, the back in ex-loco condition with the rim slightly ground away in a couple of places to accommodate steam pipes etc.£200
4BR ELECTRIC LOCO CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: E3036 as carried by BR Bo-Bo class AL4 3,300HP 25kV AC overhead electric loco, the first of the class, built by North British Loco Co Hyde Park, works No. 27793, entering traffic in September 1960. After initial trials and crew training, the loco went into store at Longsight. All was not well, and having entered service, it was dumped at Witton Goods awaiting repairs by GEC, after which it went to Derby Research Centre for more tests. After a considerable time here and at Crewe it finally returned to service in January 1967, but then taken out of use to Bury Steam Shed for storage until moved to Doncaster for refurbishment in May 1972, renumbered 84001 class 84 in December 1972, and returned to service in 1976 after frequent visits to Doncaster. Finally withdrawn in January 1979 and transferred to the National Railway Museum at York in May 1979, but not officially taken into preservation until May 1994. Moved to Barrow Hill roundhouse on extended loan in September 2000, which is due to expire in September 2008. Cast aluminium letter and numbers screwed onto an original 33” x 7½” steel backplate which was itself fixed to the cabside. The backplate has been repainted into BR “Electric Blue” as originally carried by the locomotive.£300
5TOTEM: BOROUGH GREEN AND WROTHAM BR(S) fully-flanged green in VGC with deep colour and shine. No face chips, a little untouched edge chipping only. An ex-SE&CR station between Otford and Maidstone East opened in June 1874 originally named Wrotham and Borough Green but the name reversed in June 1962. A rare totem, never seen at auction previously.£850
6SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 63966 as carried by LNER 2-8-0 class O2 No. 3836 built at Doncaster works No. 1934., entered service in July 1942. Renumbered LNER 3966 from November 1946 and BR 63966 from April 1949. A long-time Grantham engine, finally withdrawn from Retford in December 1962 and scrapped by Central Wagon Co., Ince. Repainted front some time ago, the back in ex-loco condition.£500
7LNER enamel LOCO DEPOT ALLOCATION PLATE: “NORWICH.” Black lettering on white, 9½” x 1⅜” with curved ends. Ex-loco condition with a little chipping around the bolt holes and staining. One of the more difficult plates to obtain.£600
8BRASS WORKSPLATE: “NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE CO. Queens Park Works Glasgow No. 21798 of 1917” from the ROD locomotive No. 1831 ex-works November 1917. In January 1920 it went on loan to the GWR as No. 3088 and returned to ROD in October 1922 and put into store at Beachley. In December 1923 it was transferred to the LNER becoming class O4 No. 6278C (C=GC Section) in January 1924. Subsequently renumbered 3750 August 1946, 63750 by BR in January 1950. Reclassified O4/8 in October 1952. An Immingham and later Colwick loco from where withdrawn March 1964. Diamond shape, 12¾” x 5¼” in ex-loco condition both sides.£280
9LMS 8” dial oak cased WALL CLOCK with the inscription “BR(LM) John Walker 1 South Molton Street London” and the number “17955” on the face. This number also appears on a small oval brass plate “BR(M) 17955” on the side of the back box. Next to it is an enamel plate “1848” referring to an earlier registration, probably LNWR. Unfortunately, no records have survived showing the location of this clock. The clock was restored some years ago and is in very condition and in full working order. Complete with pendulum, but no key.£680
10TOTEM: FORT WILLIAM BR(Sc) half flanged light blue in VGC with deep colour and shine, basically ex-station condition with one or two minor face and edge chips and slight edge rusting only. An ex-NBR West Highland Line terminal station opened in August 1894. A scarce totem, rarely seen at auction especially in such good condition.£2800
11CARRIAGE PRINT: NORFOLK BROADS by Frank H. Mason from the LNER Post War series issued 1945-47. A typical Broads scene with windmill, wherries and yachts evident. In an original type glazed wooden frame in VGC.£170
12CHESHIRE LINES COMMITTEE small sliding knob type HANDLAMP the internal drum stamped “CLC” and the body stamped “CLC 3 GE 163” and brass plated “Cheshire Lines Barrow.” Tapered copper lens cone and bullseye lens. All innards present, but unmarked. All glasses present but green lens is cracked. From Barrow for Tarvin station between Chester and Mouldsworth opened in May 1875, closed June 1953. Ex-station condition.£880
13ENGRAVED BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “NO. 2069 DONCASTER 1950” as carried by the (LMS) class 4F-4 2-6-0 loco 43062 which entered traffic in November 1950 at New England with single chimney. A long-time Boston loco, finally Barrow Hill from where withdrawn June 1965 and broken up at T.W. Wards at Killamarsh. The number “43062” is chalked on the back. Ex-loco condition front and back.£720
14BR(E) ENAMEL SIGN: “TRAFFIC MANAGER” 24” x 12” fully flanged in dark blue with excellent colour and shine, although having sustained a couple of face chips and edge chipping which have been professionally repaired to VGC. It seems likely that the sign was used at a port such as King’s Lynn or Boston where such personnel were located.£90
15LMS ENAMEL STATION LAMP TABLET: PLAISTOW in yellow with black lettering with good colour and shine, a little edge chipping neatly restored to VGC. On the back is painted “Leytonstone” (a possible loan at some time?). An ex-LT&SR station between Fenchurch Street and Barking, now served by LUL District Line trains, opened in March 1858. 17½” x 4½”. Possibly a unique survivor.£190
16LNER silverplate two place PICKLE JAR HOLDER complete with both jars (with lids) and two pickle forks manufactured by Gladwin “Embassy” of Sheffield. The initials “LNER” are clearly incised in the base and also on both forks. The jars are attractive cut glass. 10” tall to the top of the central handle, the base 3¾” x 7½”. VGC.£280
17BRASS SINGLE LINE KEY TOKEN: “CAMBUS JUNCTION – MANOR POWIS 5” the section names engraved around a square cutout in a rounded square end. From the Stirling – Alloa line. This token section came into existence on 3rd August 1958 when the Cambus Junction to Manor Powis line was singled, and ceased to exist on 10th October 1985 when Manor Powis signal box was closed. The line then being signalled by a train staff. Very good ex-section condition.N/S
18BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “LMS BUILT 1911 ST. ROLLOX” as carried by the ex-Caledonian Railway 782 class 0-6-0T loco No. 608 built to order Y95. Became LMS 16335 class 3F and later BR 56335 in May 1948. Withdrawn in July 1960 from Polmadie and scrapped at St Rollox works. The number “56335” has been painted on the back. Oval, 10½” x 6” the front repainted, the back cleaned except for the inscription noted.£260
19LNER CAST IRON DOORPLATE: “FIRE BRIGADE.” 18¾” x 3½” in VGC. Repainted front in white lettering on red, the back in ex-station condition. A very unusual doorplate.£200
20TOTEM: MARSH LANE AND STRAND ROAD the name on three lines, BR(M) half-flanged maroon in good condition with deep colour and shine, slight edge rusting only. An ex-L&YR Liverpool area station opened as Marsh Lane in November 1850, renamed in 1886, finally renamed Bootle New Strand in March 1967.£420
21SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 46506 as carried by the (LMS) 2-6-0 class 2F-2 loco built at Swindon in November 1952 to lot 394 and delivered new to Oswestry. A Western Region engine until transferred to the LMR in May 1963 at a variety of depots. Withdrawn in May 1967 from Newton Heath and cut up at Drapers, Hull. Repainted both sides some time ago.£720
22LMS-NCC BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WHISTLE from the U2 class 4-4-0 5’ 3” gauge loco No. 83 “CARRA CASTLE” built by North British Loco Queens Park works No. 23172 in 1925 to order L797. Named in 1932. Transferred to Ulster Transport Authority in 1949 as their No. 83 and withdrawn in 1956. Bell shaped, 9” tall, the barrel 3½” diameter, the initials “LMS” and number “83” clearly stamped into the base nut. The whistle is minus the valve which was a very ornate item. Mounted into a well made wooden base for display, the whistle is lightly polished only and VGC. This was the last steam loco built by NBL for service in Northern Ireland.£280
23ALUMINIUM LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “BRUSH TRACTION England No. 124 1959” as carried by BR A1A-A1A 1,470HP diesel-electric type 2 loco D5525 which entered service at March in April 1959. Renumbered 31107 in February 1974 class 31/1. Named “JOHN H. CARLESS VC” at Bescot Open Day on 30th August 1992. To store at Bescot in July 1995 and nameplates removed. Awaiting disposal in September 1998, but no official withdrawal date ever given. Sold to Johnston Engineering in September 1999 to work under the Fragonset banner from Tyseley. Transferred to Barrow Hill in January 2000 and used in a staged level crossing accident in 2006 for an advert. Oval, 9½” x 5¾” the front repainted in red with white lettering to VGC, the back painted in primer.£200
24BRASS CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: “2.” We are reasonably sure this is an Irish plate, possibly a Great Southern & Western Railway loco, extensive research cannot confirm the exact identity. Rectangular 17” x 9¾” basically in ex-loco condition front and back, with the number and rim lightly polished only.£280
25ALUMINIUM LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “NORTHUMBRIA” as carried by BR Co-Co 2,580HP diesel-electric type 4 loco No. D1504 built by Brush Loughborough works No. 346, entered traffic in January 1963. Renumbered 47405 class 47/4 in March 1974. Named “NORTHUMBRIA” at Newcastle Central in October 1982 with plaque underneath. Nameplates removed in March 1986 upon withdrawal from Gateshead and moved to Crewe Works where it was scrapped by December 1988. In July 1986, the nameplates were applied to loco 47526 of the same class which started life as D1109 built at Crewe in January 1967, renumbered 47526 in March 1974. After storage at Immingham the loco was moved to Crewe South Yard for component recovery, eventually sold to Fragonset in September 2001 and stored at Carnforth, still there in April 2006. On the back is a casting number “V11557” indicating that the plate was cast at Swindon Works. 51½” x 9⅞” in totally ex-loco condition.£3000
26MIDLAND RAILWAY wooden TRAIN STAFF & TICKET BOX complete with 16” long three-sided brass staff which when unlocked from the box reveals the engraved section details “Kimbolton & Huntingdon.” When the staff is inserted and turned, the lid of the box may be raised revealing a pad of blank BR tickets pre-printed for the same section (with LMS ERO order number). The box is 12½” x 9½” and 6½” high, painted red and with the section details “Kimbolton & Huntingdon” painted on the front. This token section was located on the Kettering to Huntingdon line and ceased to exist on 15th June 1959 when the line between Kimbolton and Huntingdon was closed. Good ex-signalbox condition.£2600
27NORTH BRITISH RAILWAY three-aspect HANDLAMP the body stamped “NBR” and “5673” on one side and “1439S” and “Anniesland” on the other. Complete with all innards, the reservoir stamped “NBR.” Bevel edged front lens with brass rim and copper lens cone. Bulpitt type lamp with flat-topped chimney which is the same diameter as the base of the reducing cone. Only the yellow glass lens is present inside. From an ex-NBR Glasgow suburban station opened as Great Western Road in October 1874. Restored to VGC some time ago.£120
28BR ENGRAVED BRASS WORKSPLATE: “NORTH EASTERN REGION Darlington No. 2040 1948” as carried by (LNER) class L1 2-6-4T No. 67722 which entered service in May 1948. A Bishops Stortford (30C) loco until January 1959, withdrawn from Cambridge in October 1961 following collision damage and cut up at Darlington. Oval 13” x 7½” in ex-loco condition front and back. A scarce example of a “transitional” plate in the style of the earlier LNER engraved plates.£1550
29LNER CAST IRON DOORPLATE: “BOOKING OFFICE & WAITING ROOM.” 21” x 4¾” in good condition. Repainted front with white lettering on black, but with a little chipping to the white, the back in ex-station condition.£190
30TOTEM: HECKMONDWIKE BR(NE) fully-flanged tangerine in excellent condition with deep colour and shine. An ex-L&YR station opened in July 1848, renamed Heckmondwike Central in June 1924, the suffix dropped in June 1961 and closed in June 1965. A scarce totem rarely seen at auction.£2400

33BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “ROBERT STEPHENSON & HAWTHORNS Ltd Newcastle Works 7052 1942” as carried by the Admiralty, Chatham Dockyard, outside cylinder 0-4-0ST No. 6 “AJAX.” The loco is currently preserved at Chatham Dockyard. Oval, 13” x 8½” in ex-loco condition front and back.£220
34SR one pint silverplate TANKARD manufactured by Walker & Hall, the words “Southern Railway” in garter clearly incised in the side. 4⅞” tall x 3¾” diameter at rim in VGC.£115
35TOTEM: GRANGE-OVER-SANDS BR(M) fully-flanged maroon in VGC with deep colour and shine, slight edge rusting touched in. An ex-Furness Railway station opened as Grange by the Ulverston & Lancaster Railway in September 1857, finally renamed in October 1930. A scarce totem rarely seen at auction, the last time in June 2001.£2700
36SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 61255 as carried by LNER 4-6-0 class B1 No. 1255 built by North British Loco Co, works No. 26156, which entered service in November 1947. Renumbered 61255 by BR in November 1948. A Darlington, later Thornaby, and finally Hull Dairycoates loco, withdrawn June 1967 and cut up by Garnham, Harris & Elton, Chesterfield. Filthy, but totally ex-loco condition. There is a small piece missing from the back rim near one of the bolt holes which does not detract.£800
37SHEDPLATE: 14D NEASDEN (February 1958 – June 1962, previously 34E). A scarce example, rarely seen at auction, painted back, the front in ex-loco condition.£355
38LYNTON & BARNSTAPLE RAILWAY: TYER’S BRASS SINGLE-LINE TABLET for the section “Blackmore – Wooda Bay 3” with section names engraved around the central hole. Running between Lynton and Barnstaple this narrow gauge line was incorporated in June 1895 opening to traffic on 16th May 1898. This is the original spelling of the name “Blackmore” which was adopted by the company upon opening of the line. The location later became known as “Blackmoor.” The railway was purchased by the Southern Railway on 1st July 1923 and closed by the same company on 30th September 1935. Note: This is the second of a set of five tablets, covering the entire line, to be offered in this and the following three auctions. Good ex-section condition.£2400
39BR(Sc) ENAMEL DOORPLATE: “PARCELS” fully flanged in light blue with deep colour and shine, a little edge rusting and a minor chip only. 18” x 3⅝”, one of the more difficult examples to obtain.£160
40TOTEM: WOODHALL JUNCTION BR(E) fully-flanged dark blue in VGC with deep colour and shine. A few minor edge chips and rusting only. An ex-GNR station between Lincoln and Boston opened in October 1848, originally named Kirkstead, renamed in July 1922, closed in October 1970. A rare totem, only three times previously at auction.£1300
41PULLMAN CAR BRASS TABLE LAMP in brass with a curved hexagonal base and stem with decorations at the top of the stem. Clearly stamped “ORION” at the electrical input. This was a kitchen car built by Birmingham Carriage & Wagon in 1951. Used principally on the ‘Golden Arrow’ service and rarely on State visits and Royal specials. It continued in service until September 1972 and is in preservation at Beer, near Seaton, Devon. Approx. 21” high with 6½” diameter base. Fitted with an original pink Perspex shade. The original electrical wiring is still fitted along with a contemporary 3-pin plug. Lamp and shade all in VGC.£1700
42PULLMAN CAR WOODEN COUPEE PANEL in variously coloured cut wood veneers to give a representation of a Greek urn which is surrounded by dyed green holly and the finish is so redolent of the 1920s. Ex- car “Joan” or “Evadne” built in 1928. 66” x 19” the edges are basically ex-car, but the fascia has been professionally French polished to a very high standard and VGC.£520
43PULLMAN CAR high-backed PARLOUR CAR CHAIR of the type used in steam hauled vehicles covered in replacement cloth moquette, the back buttoned, a little frayed in one or two places and would benefit from reupholstering. In good condition otherwise. 42” high, 30” deep and 28” wide.£580
44PULLMAN CAR LETTER “D” as applied to the outside of the cars on LNER and SR trains to indicate seat reservations. Aluminium, 9” x 11” with bars to fit into slots on the car side, the letter “D” painted in brown with gold edging on a cream background. The name “Pullman” is clearly stamped into the front and back. In good ex-car condition.£300
45PULLMAN CAR BRASS TABLE LAMP in brass with a round base and stem with decorations around the rim of the base and at the start of the stem. Clearly stamped “TC34” at the electrical input. Third Class parlour car No. 34 was built by Birmingham Carriage and Wagon in 1926 and used principally on Southern (and occasionally on LNER services). It was ‘remodelled for the ‘Golden Arrow’ service in 1951 and finally withdrawn from the ‘Bournemouth Belle’ service in July 1967 and subsequently sold for scrap. Approx. 20” high with 6” diameter base. Fitted with an original pink Perspex shade. Refitted for operation at 240V AC (not tested). Lamp and shade all in VGC.£1950
46PULLMAN CARS one-quarter gill GLASS SPIRITS MEASURE the “Pullman” crest clearly etched into the glass as is the measure “¼ gill.” Conical, 4¾” high with a small spout at the side to assist pouring into a drinking glass. VGC.£660
47PULLMAN CAR high-backed PARLOUR CAR CHAIR of the type used in steam hauled vehicles covered in replacement cloth moquette, a little frayed in one or two places and would benefit from reupholstering. In good condition otherwise. Reputedly from the car “PORTIA” which was a 12-wheel car built by Birmingham C&W late 1920 for SE&CR. From contemporary sources it originally had short leather covered seats of a completely different design, but it seems more than likely that these were replaced in the 1950s with the design now on offer. The car was withdrawn from service in 1961, and used as a camping coach (now dismantled). 42” high, 30” deep and 28” wide.£580
48TYER’S BRASS FACED SINGLE LINE TABLET: “SIDMOUTH JUNC – OTTERY ST MARY 8.” This token section, the first off the main line, on the Sidmouth branch ceased to exist on 8th May 1967 when the line was closed. Lightly overstamped “Out of Use” but not affecting the original engraved lettering, very good ex-section condition otherwise.£220
49GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY 12” dial mahogany veneer cased single fusee DROPCASE CLOCK with the initials “GWR” and the makers name “Kay & Co” painted on the dial. The original ivorine plate “GWR 989” is attached to the side. Records indicate that this clock was located in the Telegraph Office at Wrexham. A fabulous piece in excellent condition, in full working order and complete with pendulum and winder.£2100
50LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “BALTIC” as carried by LNWR 4-6-0 “Claughton” class loco No. 2445 built at Crewe in 1917 works No. 5385. Named “BALTIC” in July 1923. Renumbered 5948 by the LMS in March 1927 and was rebuilt with large boiler and Caprotti valve gear in June 1928. Withdrawn from service in April 1937. In addition to the loco name, the brass plate is engraved “LMS Crewe-Works July 1917” thus confirming that although the loco was built by the LNWR in 1917 it was not actually named until after the Grouping. The LMS retained the LNWR style in the manufacture of the plate completely. Only four or five locos were treated in this way and this is only the second example known to have been entered for auction and hence makes it especially rare. 72” x 2¾” and 5¾” with scalloped corners, the face lightly polished only a long time ago, the back in ex-loco condition, the wax lettering infill complete. The loco was named after the “White Star Line” steamer carrying the same name.£17000

Circular, 15” diameter, from one of the many stations and halts on the line between Tynan and Maguiresbridge, recovered when the line closed in December 1941. For a history of the line see Lot 1.£450

A token section located on the Dublin (Harcourt Street) to Wexford line which is still operated by ETS. 26” long, the brass rings around the central steel column are approx 2¼” diameter, with “key” at one end. Ex-section condition.£100
75LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “SIR HAROLD MACMICHAEL” as carried by East Africa Railways & Harbours “Governor” class metre-gauge 4-8-2+2-8-4 Garratt loco No 6006 built by Franco-Belge, France, Works No. 2988 of 1953, under licence from Beyer Peacock. Weight 152 tons. The loco was in service from 1954 to 1980, now preserved, and was allocated to Moshi, Voi and finally Nairobi. Cast brass, 78” x 5½” restored front, the back in ex-loco condition. Sir Harold Macmichael was governor of Tanganyika in the 1930s. The nameplates were removed at the time of independence in Kenya, many years before withdrawal. The vendor states that some years ago he tried to repatriate the nameplate with the loco, but the offer was declined by the museum authorities for “political reasons.” A recent article in “Heritage Railway” tells the whole story.£1000
76SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 547 as carried by the Midland Railway 4-4-0 of 483 Renewals class built at Derby in May 1914 to order 4116. Retained the number 547 in LMS days becoming class 2P. Renumbered 40547 by BR in January 1951 and withdrawn in February 1953 from Leicester. The loco was a renewal of the Johnson 4-4-0 with the same number, frames and cylinders. Totally ex-loco condition front and back. An extremely rare survivor.£500

Short reducing cone, but with a large brass hinged dome at the top which opens to reveal grille and chimney arrangement. Bevel edged front lens with copper cowling around the rim. All glasses intact and complete. The top handle has become detached at the front, but is in good condition otherwise..£100

89LONDON BRIGHTON & SOUTH COAST RAILWAY 12” dial mahogany cased single fusee spring movement DROPCASE CLOCK bearing the number “110” on the face and with the ghost letters “LB&SCR” discernable. A brass edged plate located on the front of the case also shows the number “110.” The clock was made by Coates and purchased by the railway in 1845. Its last location was in the Booking Hall at Horsham, an ex-LB&SCR station opened in February 1848. The last recorded repair was in 1940. Overall length 24”, width of case is 10” and is complete with pendulum and winder. All in very good fully working order.£4000

Withdrawn September 1963 from Gateshead and cut up at Darlington. The numbers “2559” and “60” are clearly stamped in the back (twice each). Oval, 13¼” x 7½” in ex-loco condition both sides. In common with a number of similar plates, the lettering showing the company name around the top and bottom edges was filled in.£4200

The sign is flangeless and has been neatly framed in wood. 100LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “EAST ANGLIAN” as carried by the LNER 4-6-0 B17/4 “Sandringham” class loco built at Darlington entering service in June 1936 numbered 2859 and named “NORWICH CITY.” Renamed “EAST ANGLIAN” in September 1937, streamlined, fitted with straight nameplates and reclassified B17/5. Renumbered 1659 in October 1946 and 61659 by BR in April 1948, rebuilt and reclassified B17/6 in July 1949. The streamlining was removed by April 1951. This loco was one of only two members of the class selected by Gresley for streamlining, the other being “CITY OF LONDON,” specifically for Royal Train duties between Liverpool Street and Wolferton (for Sandringham House). When the streamlining was removed, curved plates were fitted over the centre splashers, like the rest of the class, and this is one of those plates. Latterly a Yarmouth South Town allocation, the loco was withdrawn in March 1960 from Lowestoft and cut up at Stratford. Cast brass, 59” x 6½” the front lightly polished only, background repainted a long time ago, the back ex-loco.£7000
101BRASS SINGLE LINE KEY TOKEN: “STRATHCARRON – KYLE 30” the section names engraved around a round cutout in a circular end “Polo” mint style. This token section came into existence in March 1966 when Stromeferry token station was closed and the section was extended to between Strathcarron and Kyle of Lochalsh. It ceased to exist in October 1984 when the line was converted to radio electric token block controlled from Dingwall although Strathcarron and Kyle of Lochalsh signal boxes had closed several months earlier. The token instruments were housed in the station building as they always were. Very good ex-section condition.£500

Associated with Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns Ltd., Darlington” as carried by BR 204HP diesel mechanical 0-6-0 No. D2298 entering traffic at Lincoln in October 1960. Withdrawn from Gateshead in December 1968 and to store there until April 1969. Sold to the Derwent Valley Light Railway near York where it was numbered “1” and named “LORD WENLOCK” around 1977. In 1981 the loco was advertised for sale and went to Buckinghamshire Railway Centre at Quainton Road in October 1982, where it lost the name. Loco is still there as D2298. Oval, 8” x 5” ex-loco condition front and back although some scratching has been sustained on the back.£220
104CALEDONIAN RAILWAY HOTELS large china TURKEY PLATE. 21¾” x 17½” with highly decorative floral design and Grecian design around rim in gold and black. The name “Caledonian Hotel Edinburgh” appears within an oval border on the edge. Manufacturer unknown. The Caledonian Hotel which opened in December 1903, had been planned as early as 1867, but plans were shelved due to lack of funds. It underwent three changes of name: “Princes Street Station Hotel”; “Caledonian Station Hotel” and finally “Caledonian Hotel.” British Transport Hotels who assumed ownership in January 1948, sold the hotel in 1981. Following modernisation it is still in use today. A little crazing of the glaze does not detract. An outstanding piece in excellent condition.£260
105LMS PATTERN SIGNALBOX BOARD: “GEORGES ROAD JCT.” from an ex-CLC location between Cheadle and Stockport Tiviot Dale, the junction for Wellington Road Goods. Georges Road Junction signal box was ready for use in 1884 and was opened by the Cheshire Lines Railway. It was built to the Type 1b design fitted with a 50 lever CLR Tappet frame which was eventually extended to 53 levers. It was out of use from 16th December 1980 due to tunnel damage caused by construction of the M63 (now M60) motorway, and was closed on 18th March 1984. 76½” x 10” repainted in black both sides, the lettering in white.£280
106SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 45633 as carried by Stanier Jubilee 5XP-6P class 4-6-0 loco 5633 built at Crewe in November 1934 to lot 112 and named “TRANS-JORDAN” by May 1936. The loco was renamed “ADEN” in September 1946. Renumbered 45633 by BR in December 1948. A Preston and Carnforth loco, withdrawn from Warrington in October 1965 and cut up by Wards at Killamarsh. Repainted both sides some time ago.£1800
107SHEDPLATE: 66E CARSTAIRS (June 1960 – August 1963, previously 64D). The loco number 73108 has been chalked on the back. The loco was allocated there from January 1966. It was a BR standard class 5 built at Doncaster in December 1955 to lot 404 and delivered new to Eastfield where it spent most of its life. Withdrawn in December 1966 from Carstairs and scrapped by G.H. Campbell of Airdrie. Complete with a “SC” (Self Cleaning) plate, both items in ex-loco condition, the background of the latter painted blue with white letters. (2)£240

A Westbury and later Old Oak Common loco, withdrawn from Southall in November 1961 and broken up at Swindon. Restored front many years ago, the back in ex-loco condition. The hall was situated one mile west of Taunton, but was demolished in 1962.£1550
115SR “BATTLE OF BRITAIN” CLASS enamel and brass BADGE OF THE “ROYAL AIR FORCE” as carried by the Bulleid designed 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives of the class that were not specifically named after a squadron. 27” x 22½” oval, the brass rim surrounding a turquoise coloured enamel panel with coat of arms showing an outstretched eagle with blue background in centre flying out of a circle with the words “Per Ardua Ad Astra” and a royal crown atop. The cast iron metal retaining ring which holds the badge at the back is possibly a replacement. In VGC overall, but the enamel appears to have lost most of its shine, the colours though are all present, strong and clear.£8100

These very attractive motifs were originally affixed to the sides of the then new 25kv AC Overhead Electric Locomotives (Classes AL1-AL5, later classes 81-85) constructed for the Euston – Manchester and Liverpool electrification from 1958 onwards. They were replaced by the later BR “double-arrow” symbol in the mid 1960s. 18¼” x 18¼” overall, serial numbers cast and stamped in the back and in excellent condition.£800

The makers name “British Power Signal Co London & Slough” is embossed in the bodywork. Note: although the signal is worked electrically, there is a detachable oil fuelled lamp to light the signal aspects! Very good ex-lineside condition.£120

It ceased to exist on in October 1984 when the line was converted to radio electric token block controlled from Dingwall although Achnasheen and Strathcarron signal boxes had closed a few months earlier. A double chimney was fitted in August 1957. A long-time Kings Cross “Top Shed” loco from where it was withdrawn in April 1963 and cut up at Doncaster Works in May the same year. The front of the plate was sanded ready for painting a long time ago, but never completed, the back is in ex-loco condition. A rare opportunity to purchase such a prestigious plate from such a prestigious class of locomotive.£7600

The loco retained the same number at Grouping, but reclassified J25, then renumbered 5657 in July 1946 and BR 65657 in January 1950. It was withdrawn in April 1939, then reinstated because of WW2 in October 1939 and sent on loan to the GWR until August 1946. Withdrawn from Borough Gardens in November 1958 and cut up at Darlington. The plate has been cleaned both sides.£200

LNER records show that it was used at Shildon Yard West (Shunters Cabin) on the Darlington – Bishop Auckland line. Complete with pendulum, winder and key to bottom door lock. 200LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “ROBERT THE DEVIL” as carried by LNER 4-6-2 class A1 loco No. 1479 built at Doncaster in July 1923 works No. 1571. Renumbered 4479 in April 1925 and withdrawn as an A1 from New England in January 1942 and sent to Doncaster for conversion to class A3 in July 1942. Re-entered traffic in August 1942, becoming LNER 110 in August 1946 and BR 60110 in March 1949. Double chimney fitted in May 1959 and German type smoke deflectors were fitted in June 1961. A long-time Kings Cross loco withdrawn from there in June 1963 and cut up at Doncaster in July 1963. 55½” x 6½” cast brass, the front lightly polished, background and back repainted a long ago. The number “110” is clearly stamped on the underside. This was the only A1/A3 class loco to retain the same tender throughout its service. Long regarded as one of the best A3 names.£15300

The company was incorporated in July 1846 and opened the line from Colwick – Grantham in July 1850. Leased to the GNR in April 1855 and renamed Nottingham & Grantham Railway in May 1860. 242GWR TREGENNA CASTLE HOTEL silverplate EGG CUP SET manufactured by Walker & Hall. A 5½” diameter base standing on three ball feet with four egg cups and four spoons standing on it, the central carrying handle standing 8” tall. The initials “GWR” (in script) surrounded by the hotel name in garter are clearly incised atop the base which is repeated in each of the egg cups and also each spoon. The Tregenna Castle Hotel located at St Ives, Cornwall, was originally built in 1874 and leased to the GWR in 1878, eventually bought outright by them in 1895. Additions to the building were made in 1932. One of the hotels sold off in 1983, purchased by Batchshire Ltd (a Sea Containers subsidiary) and still open today. A very attractive and rare set in excellent condition.£720

Following transfer from the South Eastern Division in June 1958, the loco spent time at Weymouth, Nine Elms, Eastleigh and finally Guildford from where it was withdrawn in October 1966 and cut up by John Cashmore at Newport. The glazed display reads “6 to West Croydon B Box.” A supplementary steel cased glazed display above the instrument describes the route aspects. Unfortunately we cannot say whether the instrument came from either Waddon or West Croydon "A" signal box. West Croydon "B" signal box opened as West Croydon South in 1875 and was re-named in late SR/early BR days. Fitted with a 36 lever frame, the non-standard design signal box was closed in October 1981. Stands 23” high plus rodding at base. Good, ex-box condition although the lower display has lost a little of the original paint.£220

255ALUMINIUM HEADBOARD: “THE LEA VALLEY ENTERPRISE.” Introduced in the early 1960s, this prestigious express freight service ran between Tottenham (leaving at 2:55pm) in North East London and Whitemoor Yard, north of March, Cambridgeshire, picking up wagons at Angel Road Ponders End Waltham Cross and Broxbourne and then ran “fast” to destination. The service offered overnight transits to Newcastle, Birmingham, Northampton and Liverpool. 40” x 10” finished in GER blue in ex-loco condition. The legend “Return to Stratford MPD” is hand painted on the rear above the bracket for fixing it to the front of the two Brush type 2 locos (later class 31) rostered to work the train such was the popularity of the service which often reached 70 wagons. There was a further express freight service running from Chelmsford to Whitemoor called “The East Essex Enterprise.”£850
256CARLISLE CITADEL STATION COMMITTEE BRIDGEPLATE: “CCSC 4” cast iron oval, 18” x 12” in the style of the LNWR with a double-line border containing the initials and the number 4 at the centre. Repainted some time ago in black with white lettering, edging and number, the back in ex-trackside condition. The station committee was set up by the Caledonian Railway and LNWR, both users of the station, to manage running of traffic and trains in the station area. Grouped into the LMSR in 1923. Astonishingly rare!£700

Bevel edged glass lens with brass rim. All innards complete but unmarked. All glasses intact and complete. Restored to VGC some time ago.£280

The instrument originated from either Brayton until October 1967 and then Wigton until the closure of Aspatria. To the south the adjacent box was Aspatria No.5 Colliery until January 1949, Bullgill until October 1971 and then Maryport Station until the closure of Aspatria. 20” high and 10” wide, in good ex-signalbox condition.£520

Renumbered 50011 class 50 in February 1974. Named “CENTURION” in September 1979 and the crest was added at Paddington in May 1986. Nameplates removed in February 1987 and withdrawn the same month. Sent to Crewe for static testing in November 1989 and transferred to Departmental use. Scrapped at Crewe by staff from Texas Metals of Hyde, Manchester in September 1992. The badge shows the Roman centurion device of an outstretched eagle standing upon a standard within a rope design and the name “Centurion” beneath a crown at the top. 6⅝” x 8½” in ex-loco condition front and back.£500

Superheater fitted in November 1919. Became LNER 1427 class C1 in October 1923, renumbered 4427 in November 1925. The number 2857 was allocated in the 1946 renumbering, but never carried as it was withdrawn in February 1945 from Lincoln and cut up at Doncaster. The number “4427” has been etched into the rear as was the usual Doncaster Works practice. Oval “soup plate” 17½” x 9½”. A magnificent plate, the front lightly polished only, back ex-loco.£2100

Only two BR(W) stations are known to have been fitted with these roundels: Bristol Temple Meads and Birmingham Snow Hill. Jn.” in red above it indicating that the mileage was taken from Wear Valley Junction as the starting point. Stands 38” tall and 12” wide at maximum, the top casting affixed to the cast iron support, all standing on a base 18” diameter. Wear Valley Junction was located on the Bishop Auckland - Wearhead line. The station lost its passenger services in July 1935. Restored to good condition some time ago.£75

The body has a large brass oval plate “Camno Gates No. 8 Alyth Jct.” and a second brass oval “Bulpitts Patent Sole Vendors Blackley Young & Co Glasgow.” The “8” on the Camno plate is repeated on a small plate on the reducing cone. The body is additionally stamped “828.” Complete with all innards although unmarked. Glasses complete and intact. Bevel edged front lens with copper rim. 300LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “ELDER-DEMPSTER LINES MERCHANT NAVY CLASS” as carried by the (SR) 4-6-2 “Merchant Navy Class” Pacific loco 35030 built at Eastleigh in April 1949 to Order HO3393. The loco was rebuilt at Eastleigh in April 1958. Latterly a Nine Elms, Weymouth and finally Nine Elms engine, it was withdrawn in July 1967 and broken up by Buttigiegs at Newport late in 1968. 73” x 30¼” cast brass, target shaped with enamel centre showing the “Elder-Dempster Line” red ensign with a gold crown on a pale green background. Note: the red background to the name, the flag and its background were all repainted a long time ago and some very neat repairs to a couple of chips in the enamel, sustained whilst in service, can be detected. Otherwise, the plate is in ex-loco condition with plenty of knocks and scrapes evident. The loco is distinguished as having worked the last steam hauled train on the Southern Region from Weymouth – Waterloo at 14:07 on 9th July 1967.£28500

306SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 6957 as carried by GWR Hall class 4-6-0 loco “NORCLIFFE HALL” built at Swindon to lot 340 in April 1943 but not named until April 1947. Fitted for oil burning in April 1947 and renumbered 3952 until the equipment was removed in March 1950 when the original number was restored. A Bristol Bath Road engine for many years, it was shunted around a number of depots before ending up at Oxford from where it was withdrawn in October 1965 and scrapped by J. Friswell, Banbury. Repainted both sides some time ago. The hall is one mile South East of Manchester Airport.£700

The section temporarily ceased to exist on 13th November 1983 when the Arisaig token station was closed and one train working was introduced between Glenfinnan and Mallaig. However, the Glenfinnan to Arisaig token section was brought back into use in April 1984 and finally ceased to exist on 6th December 1987 when the line was converted to radio electric token block controlled from Banavie. 316GWR ROYAL HOTEL silverplate PICKLE JAR HOLDER manufactured by Mappin & Webb with the company coat of arms, the initials “GWR” and “Great Western Royal Hotel” in scroll underneath clearly incised in the side. 5⅝” diameter saucer, 6” tall to top of finial atop lifting lid and in VGC. The hotel, an integral part of Paddington station in London, was opened in June 1854 originally with 103 bedrooms and 15 sitting rooms and was “the finest in London”; later additions increased capacity to 250 bedrooms. The hotel was sold by the BRB in 1983 and still operates today, having recently been refurbished.£280

The company became North Western Gas Board on May 1949. Together with matching brass oval worksplate “Andrew Barclay & Co Limited, Caledonia Works, Kilmarnock No. 1655. 1920” and its oval cast iron Registration Plate “Registered by The Railway Executive No. 10 1952.” The loco was scrapped by a Warrington scrap dealer in July 1969. Dimensions: nameplate 30½” 6½” with scalloped corners; worksplate 16¾” x 11¾”; registration plate 12” x 6”. The section between Sandy No.1 and Sandy LNE Junction signal boxes ceased to exist when Sandy LNE Junction signal box was closed (sometime before 1964) and the token section was extended to between Sandy No.1 and Blunham. Steel with the section names engraved and picked out in red, 9½” long, the rings 1⅛ diameter in good ex-section condition.£220

In good ex-trackside condition. The L&LSR ran from Londonderry to Farland Point and Buncara, the first part opened in December 1863, but closed 90 years later in August 1953. Exceedingly rare!£580

Returned to the UK and purchased by BR in December 1948 becoming 90103. A long-time Colwick loco withdrawn there in November 1965 and cut up by Garnham, Harris & Elton, Chesterfield. Repainted front a long time ago, ex-loco back. A very neat weld repair to left hand bolt area unnoticeable from the front does not detract.£350

This ex-HR token section came into existence in May 1966 when Clunes token station closed and the token section was extended to between Muir of Ord and Lentran. It ceased to exist in January 1988 when Lentran signal box was closed and the section was extended to between Muir of Ord and Clachnaharry signal boxes. Very good ex-section condition.£300
347CAVAN LEITRIM & ROSCOMMON LIGHT RAILWAY & TRAMWAY Co LIMtd 36” x 2” tinplate POSTERBOARD HEADING. Unfortunately, the grey with black lettering has faded with age, but is original nonetheless. The tramway ran from Dromind – Belturbet with a branch, first part opened October 1887, renamed Cavan & Leitrim Railway in August 1895 and grouped into Great Southern Railway in January 1925. Possibly a unique survivor.£280
348LNWR. A pair of Tyer’s wooden cased Permissive BLOCK INSTRUMENTS both nicely brass labelled with the company name and address. Both are 19” tall and 12” wide at base and have a glazed display with needle showing three positions “Train on Line”, “Line Closed” and “Line Clear” and the name “Tyer’s Patent.” One instrument has additional front and side plungers and a small brass framed glazed display currently showing “Line Closed.” We understand these instruments pre-date the more common LNWR Fletchers instruments. 350ALUMINIUM LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “BLUE PETER II” as carried by the class 43 HST power car 43151 built at Crewe to Lot 30941 class 253 as a spare car for the Western Region in set 253041 entering service in June 1981. Named “BLUE PETER II” on 11th May 1987 at Newcastle Central. The plate incorporates the “Blue Peter” symbol as promoted by the BBC Television children’s programme that has run for many years. The winners of a Blue Peter competition had the honour of naming the HST as their prize. The nameplates were removed in November 1989. Classified as loco stock from November 1988, the loco is still in use with First Great Western at Landore. 34½” x 9” in basically ex-loco condition, although the back has been cleaned.£1100

Unfortunately when Tal-y-Cafn token station on the Blaenau Festiniog branch was closed in 1966 and the token section was extended to between Llanwrst and Llandudno Junction there were still Nos. 1 and 2 signal boxes at Llandudno Junction. As a result we do not know whether the token originates from this time or the time after 1970 when Llandudno Junction No. 2 signal box was closed and No. 1 signal box was renamed Llandudno Junction. 23” long, the brass rings around the central steel column are approx 2¼” diameter. A copper-topped STATION LAMP 22” high to top of chimney, 13” wide and 11” deep, with three glazed aspects, one of which opens to reveal the reservoir, burner, reflector and glass flute complete. Brackets with screwholes at the rear for wall fixing. All metalwork is painted black. A label affixed to the reflector shows that it was from Ashbourne, a Derbyshire station at the end of the line from Uttoxeter, originally opened in May 1852, then re-sited in August 1899 and reopened as a joint station with the LNWR, closed finally October 1963. Good ex-station condition.£380

411LANCASHIRE & YORKSHIRE RAILWAY wooden cased “Train Waiting” BLOCK INSTRUMENT the glazed front with two indicators “Received” and “Sent” also needles with the positions “Train On Line” and “Line Clear.” Underneath are a brass plunger and switch to change the aspect in the lower glazed panel from blank to “Train Waiting”. A brass label at the centre bears the engraved name “Low Moor No. 1.” Low Moor No.1 signal box was located at the Halifax end of the Low Moor complex of lines on the Halifax to Bradford line and was the junction for the Low Moor Fork line. It was a L&YR standard design opened in November 1893 and closed in January 1970 fitted with a 30 lever L&YR Tappet frame. The instrument originated from either Wyke (closed between 11/1964 and 11/1965), Lightcliffe November 1972 and then Halifax until No.1 was closed. On the Low Moor Fork line the adjacent box was Low Moor No.5. 18½” high 13” x 7½” the base clearly branded “LYR.” Good, ex-signalbox condition.£210

414TYER’S FIBRE SINGLE LINE TABLET: “LEYBURN – BEDALE 16.” This section came into existence when Jervaulx signal box was closed (between 1962 and 1965) and the token section was extended to between Leyburn and Bedale. It ceased to exist in 1983 when Leyburn signal box was closed and the line between became Northallerton and Redmire became worked by a train staff. The name “Bedale” has been re-engraved. Good ex-section condition.£280

When the colliery closed circa April 1977 it was moved to Cronton Colliery becoming “63 000 425” . In September 1984 it went to Marple & Gillott Ltd, Sheffield, presumably for scrap. Diamond shaped 13” x 5¼” in ex-loco condition front and back, with slight scoring around the base caused when the loco was involved in an accident.£90

Latterly allocated to Stockton, Thornaby and Ardsley, withdrawal came in December 1964 from Wakefield followed by cutting up by A. Draper of Hull. The plate has been cleaned both sides, but with evidence of water staining.£580

There was a signal box at this station, until closed on 7th November 1956, on the NBR Aberfoyle line. At which time the box was replaced by a ground frame. Passenger services ceased in 1951, but freight services continued for some years. Used, ex-station condition, the shaft of the key a little twisted.£150

A freight tank loco. Together with a rectangular cast iron plate “Deutsche Reichbahn” also fitted to the cabside. Dimensions: Smokebox 23¾” x 8” aluminium numbers riveted to steel plate; cast iron plate: 23½” x 4”. Both items in filthy ex-loco condition. (2)£300
477GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY large three-aspect HANDLAMP the body stamped “GNR” on one side and brass labelled “Great Northern Railway Company Counthorpe Bx No.2 Corby” on the other. The reducing cone is stamped “GNR 5866” and has a brass oval plate “T. Knight & Co. Highgate Works Leopold St Birmingham.” Complete with all innards which slide in from the front. Bevel edged front lens with painted lens cone and rim. All glasses intact and complete. From a signalbox on the East Coast Main Line between Essendine and Grantham. Restored to VGC some time ago.£380

By 1960 Bovey signal box had closed and the line between Heathfield and Moretonhampstead was worked by a train staff. Used, ex-section condition.£820

An ex-SER station on the Folkestone Line between Paddock Wood and Ashford opened in August 1842 once a junction station for the Kent & East Sussex line. A rare totem seen at auction only three times previously, the last time in 2001.£750

Later Korea National Railway No. CS2.63. Rectangular, 14½” x 7½” the front repainted, the back in ex-loco condition. The plate is slightly curved to fit the smokebox side. An ex-Birkenhead Railway station opened in July 1863 as Whitby Locks renamed in September 1870. The railway was jointly vested in the GWR and LNWR in July 1861. Ellesmere Port No.1 signal box closed on 4th October 1971.£130

Will look good with a minimal amount of restoration. One of the larger 4’ long totems installed at a limited number of stations in the London Area. From the ex-North London Railway terminal station in London, next to Liverpool Street, opened in November 1865, closed in June 1986. A rare totem, only three times at auction, the last in 1999.£1900

A long-time Barry engine until transferred to Llanelly in July 1964 from where withdrawn in August 1965 and scrapped by Birds at Bynea. Repainted front in red with gold numbering and rim, the back in ex-loco condition. A neatly repaired hairline crack does not detract.£600

The words “Pink Paraffin” are shown within a decreasing circle on both sides of the white globe. 16½” x 15½” a small chip in the glass at the base where the globe was held by retaining screws, good otherwise.£30

499BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WHISTLE, organ pipe type complete with operating lever, the initials “GWR” clearly stamped in the base along with embossed letter “W” (Westinghouse) in circle and the numbers “1118” and “12689”. The whistle barrel is also stamped “GWR” near the base. This is an air operated whistle of the BR class “08” type and it is thought this particular example may have been from one of the early GWR 0-6-0 diesel shunters built between 1936-1948 which became 15100-15107 in BR days. 12⅜” tall x 6½” to end of operating lever, the barrel 1⅛” diameter, in good ex-loco condition.£350
500SNCF. A pair of large LOCOMOTIVE OIL HEADLAMPS, one with clear lens, the other with a blue lens and both with white painted perimeter band around the glass. Apart from brass catches and screws, everything else is painted black. Both are embossed “SNCF” in the body, one having a serial number “3811” the other (blue) unnumbered. Brass labels with the makers name Albert Butin, Paris, on one and Duvard & Villars, St Ouen Seine, on the other (blue lens) are present. Both are complete with innards, but the blue lens example has no reflector. 21” high to top of carrying handles, the lens 11” diameter and 8¼” deep. Both restored to VGC. (2)£110
