298BRASS BUILDERS PLATE: “OLIVER & Co Limited Engineers, Chesterfield 1882.” The company was mostly responsible for the production of engineering equipment especially for the mining industry but according to a local source two 0-4-0 vertical boiler locos were built in 1882, one for Edward Eastwood of Chesterfield and the other was retained as a works shunter. However, other records state that they did not build any locos before 1889 when two metre gauge 0-4-0ST locos were built for the Cranford Ironstone Co in Northants. Oliver was taken over by Markhams in 1889, who became continued production of their mining equipment and also built a further steam 17 locos . The horse “Bois Roussel” owned by the Hon. P. Beatty won the 1938 Derby, and Beswick China made a model of him (he was a Palomino - quite unusual for a racehorse, we believe).
