Believed to have originated from the North Tyneside electrified lines. Not seen before.£60
2CAST IRON TRESPASS NOTICE: “DEARNE VALLEY RAILWAY – PUBLIC NOTICE … (plus five lines of text). By Order” (RAG Ref: TPDV101). Rectangular 31½” x 17⅞” with reverse radius curves the inner corners of the border. The railway ran from Hemsworth – Black Carr in Yorkshire and opened in May 1909. Initially worked by the Hull & Barnsley Railway, later by the L&YR. Grouped into the LMS in January 1923. A rare notice in totally ex-lineside condition.£5000
3BRASS WORKSPLATE: “NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE Coy Ltd Hyde Park Works Glasgow № 24618 1940” as carried by Stanier design Class 8F 2-8-0 No. 48250 built for the Ministry of Supply and numbered 318. The loco worked in Iran from October 1941 to May 1948 numbered 41.117. It was returned to War Dept ownership as their № 70318 and was bought by BR in October 1949 becoming 48250. It was shedded at Bescot, Gorton, Speke Junction and Agecroft from where it was withdrawn in 1966. Circular, 7¾” diameter, restored face, the back in original condition.£170
4SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS SINGLE LANGUAGE BRASS CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: 810 16BR from the 3’ 6” gauge South African Railways 4-8-2 loco built by  Beyer Peacock works № 5971 in 1920.  Last allocated to Sydenham. Scrapped by Chicks Scrap Metal of Sydenham in July 1993. Oval, 20½” x 14½” in good unrestored condition, the centre background painted red, outside in green, the back in ex-loco condition.£340
5SOUTHERN RAILWAY TARGET SIGN: SOUTHAMPTON CENTRAL (The suffix appearing in the lower crescent). 36” x 13” in ex-station condition with a little edge chipping and rusting only. From an ex-LSWR station opened as Southampton West in November 1895 having replaced a station known as Southampton West End and Bletchynden prior to that. The target is still attached to the original wooden batten. A rare target offered only three times previously at auction.£550
6SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 73114 as carried by the BR Standard class 5 4-6-0 loco built at Doncaster to Lot 403 and delivered to Nine Elms in November 1955. Named “ETARRE” in April 1960 following withdrawal of the SR “King Arthur” class loco with the same name. The loco spent many years at Nine Elms, before a brief transfer to Eastleigh and finally Weymouth from where it was withdrawn in June 1966 and cut up by John Cashmore at Newport. Repainted front and back with a hardly noticeable neat weld repair at the centre.£1100
7SHEDPLATE: 32E YARMOUTH VAUXHALL (1949 – January 1959). This GER built shed (1883), despite being the largest and most ornate of the three Yarmouth sheds, had the smallest allocation numbering between 5 and 9 locos. It worked as a sub of 32D South Town from 1957, but retained its code until closure. Repainted front, the back in ex-loco condition. A rare example, seldom offered at auction.£480
8LONDON BRIGHTON & SOUTH COAST RAILWAY Tyer’s one wire two position wooden cased BLOCK INSTRUMENT with glazed aperture showing miniature signal arms for “Up Train on Line” and “Down Train on Line.” Below this is an enamel plate bearing the name “Uckfield” and two brass plungers below that. At the base below the block instrument is a boxed plunger and located above it is the section gong. All three items are attached to a stout wooden board which was attached to the signalbox shelf. The instrument was recovered from Isfield signalbox which is an 1877 built Saxby & Farmer Type 5 design signal box located on the LBSCR Groombridge to Lewes line. The original 13 lever Saxby & Farmer Rocker frame was extended to 16 levers in 1905 and the box closed on in February 1969 when the line between Uckfield and Lewes closed. Isfield box remained, becoming derelict until restored in the mid 1980s and is now part of the Lavender Line. 39” x 15” overall, in good unrestored condition. See also Lot 258.£850
9BR(Sc) ENAMEL DOORPLATE: “LADIES WAITING ROOM” (on two lines) in light blue with white letters, deep colour and shine. Virtually mint, minor touched-in edge chip repairs only. 18” x 6” fully flanged.£130
10TOTEM: SYSTON. BR(M) fully flanged maroon in excellent condition with deep colour and shine, a little minor edge chipping and rusting only. From an ex-MR station between Leicester and Loughborough, at the junction for Melton Mowbray, opened in May 1840, closed March 1968 and since re-opened. A scarce totem.£520
11CARRIAGE PRINT: OVERY STAITHE NORFOLK by Acanthus from the LNER post-war series 1948 – 1955 one of only two carriage print images painted by this artist. A typical Norfolk coastal scene with a number of small rowing boats waiting for their next turn of use, overlooked by a terrace of fisherman’s houses. Mint condition and in an original type glazed wooden frame.£320
12GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY general purpose HANDLAMP unusually with a curved front lens in an opening door which reveal innards comprising only the burner holder and a reflector. The initials “GCR” are clearly stamped into one side of the body. The lamp is completely devoid of paint, but has been nicely burnished to VGC.£80
13ALUMINIUM WORKSPLATE: “BEYER PEACOCK (HYMEK) Ltd Serial № 7930 Manchester 1962 Diesel Engine Bristol Siddeley Coventry Transmission J Stone & Co Deptford” as carried by BR Type 3 B-B Class 35 loco D7036. New to 88A Cardiff Canton in June 1962, it was withdrawn from 81A Old Oak Common in June 1972 and cut up at Swindon Works in October 1972. Rectangular, 12¾” x 5⅛” in ex-loco condition both sides.£500
14GWR HOTELS SILVERPLATE SODA SYPHON HOLDER manufactured by Elkington. 6” diameter base, 6½” tall plus carrying handles. The GWR coat of arms with the wording “Great Western Railway Hotels” in scroll underneath are clearly incised on the side. Excellent condition.£550
15LNER SIGNALBOX BOARD: “HUNTINGDON NORTH № 2.” This was an 1874 built GNR Type 1 design located on the GNR East Coast Main Line. The 61-lever signal box was closed in March 1977 when signalling passed to Peterborough panel box Wood with metal letters, 92” x 9½” repainted to VGC.£280
16SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 30046 as carried by Drummond LSWR Class X14 0-4-4T fitted for push and pull working and later classified M7.  Built at Nine Elms in 1905. In the1950s it was allocated to Exmouth Junction shed and was withdrawn from there in February 1959 and scrapped at Eastleigh in April the same year. Front repainted black, but numbers stripped of paint, the back in ex-loco condition with the BR(S) triangle clearly visible.N/S
17SHEDPLATE: 29A PERTH (1935 – July 1950). This former Caledonian Railway shed was home to 140 locos during this period. It became 63A in 1950 and closed to steam in May 1967. Repainted front, the back in ex-loco condition. A very rare example, only three times previously offered at auction.£300
18LANCASHIRE & YORKSHIRE RAILWAY. A Tyer & Co sloping front wooden cased BLOCK INSTRUMENT with glazed front dial showing the positions “Train on Line”, “Line Closed” and “Line Clear” and the title “Tyer’s Patent” all in black on white. Above and below the dial are the embossed brass labels “Up Loop” and “Featherstone Coly.” The base at the front bears the manufacturer’s label “Tyer & Co. Ltd., Train Signalling Patents, Electrical & Mechanical, London.” Featherstone Colliery signal box was a 1906 built L&YR Standard design on the LYR Wakefield to Goole line fitted with a 43-lever L&YR Tappet frame which closed in November 1964. 12” x 6” base, 18½” high. In VGC, except that the front glass is cracked.£200

20TOTEM: GRAYS. BR(E) half flanged dark blue in VGC with deep colour and shine, one face chip neatly filled, but awaiting painting, and attention to a little edge chipping and rusting only. From an ex-LT&SR South Essex station between Barking and Tilbury Riverside, opened in April 1854, still open today.£400
21CARRIAGE PRINT: SAFFRON WALDEN ESSEX by F W Baldwin from the LNER post-war series 1948 - 1955. A colourful street scene showing a variety of houses in many different styles of construction from timber fronted through to brick in a street devoid of any traffic, just a few pedestrians. Mint condition and in an original type glazed wooden frame.£50
22COLNE VALLEY RAILWAY SLIDING-KNOB (GER Pattern) HANDLAMP. The location “Earls Colne 1” is clearly stamped in the reducing cone and a faint “Kerosene” can also be seen. The lamp is otherwise unmarked. Innards comprise BR(E) reservoir, LNER burner and unmarked reflector. Back handle present. Bevel-edged front lens and brass lens cone. Both internal lenses present and intact. From a Colne Valley & Halstead Railway station between Chappel and Halstead in Essex, closed in January 1962. Restored to VGC.£220
23BRASS LOCOMOTIVE WORKSPLATE: “LMS BUILT ST. ROLLOX 1911” as carried by McIntosh Class 3F 0-6-0T № 56335 originally Caledonian Railway № 608 and then LMS 16335. Withdrawn from Polmadie in June 1960 and scrapped at St. Rollox Works the following September. Oval, 10½” x 6” restored front, the back cleaned and bearing the chalked number “56335.”£300

25BRASS LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “WALTER SCOTT” as carried by Standard Gauge 0-6-0ST built by Manning Wardle works № 1237 in 1892 which was delivered new to Walter Scott, Contractors, at Corby, Northants, as their № 1 and in later years was acquired by Sir Lindsay Parkinson, another Contractor, via Cudworth and Johnson, Dealers, of Wrexham  . It was used on various contracts including the widening of the GNR mainline to Stoke, the MSLR at Brackley, the GWR Felin Fran to Pontardawe scheme in West Glamorgan, Cogload Junction to Norton Fitzwarren, Grovesend and, in 1942, the Royal Ordnance Factory at Risley. Details of disposal unknown. 48” x 6¾” face restored, the back in ex-loco condition.£800
26SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 4954 as carried by Collett GWR "Hall" Class 4-6-0 "PLAISH HALL" built in August 1929 at Swindon and new to Wolverhampton, Stafford Road. By August 1950 it was resident at Bristol Bath Road and in March 1959 was to be found allocated to Oxford. Its last shed allocation was Oxley from where it was withdrawn in November 1964 and scrapped at Cashmore's, Great Bridge, the following month. Repainted front and back, the back bears some details of the loco painted by a previous owner.£580
27SHEDPLATE: 82C SWINDON (1949 – April 1965 to steam, completely 1970). This ex- GWR shed had an allocation of 120 in the 1950s. During this period it was home to 7 “Castles”, 7 “Saints”, 4 “Bulldogs”, 6 “Stars”, 7 “Castles” and 12 “Halls.” In its final year its most famous loco was the last active “County”, 1011 “County of Chester.” Front repainted, the back in ex-loco condition.£150
28LNWR. A wooden-cased Fletcher’s twin-needle BLOCK INSTRUMENT with the ivorine description plate at the base “North Lines Huddersfield № 1.” The glazed display shows “Up Line” and “Down Line” with a dial and tapper below. Huddersfield No1 signal box closed in November 1958 when signalling of Huddersfield station passed to Huddersfield panel box. 11” wide, 25” high, in good ex-box condition, complete with the wooden plinth which accommodates the bell below the main body. …£100
29BR(M) 8” DIAL NON-FUSEE WALL CLOCK manufactured by “Smiths Empire.” With a second hand. The details have been hand written: “BR(M) 20869.” No record of final location of the clock exists, but the vendor thinks it may be from the Derby area. Complete with key winder and in full working order.£200
30TOTEM: BENDERLOCH. BR(Sc) fully flanged light blue in excellent condition with deep colour and shine, a couple of small face chips expertly repaired. From an ex-Callander & Oban Railway station between Connel Ferry and Ballachulish, opened in August 1903, closed March 1966. A rare totem offered only twice previously at auction, the last time in June 2000.£800
31BR(W) ENAMEL SIGN: “NO SPITTING” in chocolate and cream with deep colour and shine, minor chipping around screw holes only. Reputed to have been removed from Reading Steam Shed (81D) upon closure in the 1960s. 24” x 6” in VGC.£800
32GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY SHUNTER’S four aspect HANDLAMP with nicely polished brass reducing cone and lifting dome with a copper clasp to reveal chimney underneath. The manufacturer’s name “G. Polkey Ltd Birmingham 1945” and the initials “GWR” are stamped into the body side. Bevel –edged front lens with brass bezel. Innards comprise unmarked reservoir, burner stamped BR(WR) and unmarked reflector. All internal glasses complete and intact. Restored to VGC with an orange stripe all the way round just above the base.£70
33ENGRAVED BRASS WORKSPLATE: “PECKETT & SONS Ltd Bristol 1930 № 1806” as carried by the standard gauge Class R4 0-4-0ST named "FOLA" which was delivered new to the Tunnel Portland Cement Co. Ltd., West Thurrock, Essex. Subsequently scrapped. Oval, 15” x 8½” in ex-loco condition front and back. As is usual with these plates, the fixing studs on the back have been cut off.£300
34BRASS CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: 4959 as carried by the Collett GWR Hall Class 4-6-0 4959 “PURLEY HALL” built at Swindon in September 1929. First shed allocation was Westbury. In the 1950s it could be found at Tyseley. Its last shed allocation was Didcot from where it was withdrawn in December 1964. Scrapped at Buttigiegs, Newport, in April 1965. Completely ex-loco condition front and back, it hasn’t been touched since the day it was bought from Swindon Works.£1350
35LNER ENAMEL LAMP TABLET: CAMPSIEGLEN in cream with brown lettering and border, a little rust staining and weathering only. From an ex-NBR station between Kirkintilloch and Killearn opened by the Blane Valley Railway in July 1867, closed October 1951. 16” x 5” VGC generally.£200
36SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 42799 as carried by the LMS class 4 later class 5 2-6-0 loco № 13099 built to Lot 21 at Crewe in December 1927 Works № 5791. Renumbered 2799 in 1934 and 42799 at Nationalisation. For many years a Burton engine, before going to Nottingham, Bolton and finally Gorton. Withdrawn in January 1965 and cut up by Cox & Danks, Wadsley Bridge. Ex-loco condition front and back.£440
37SHEDPLATE: 71G BATH GREEN PARK (1948 – February 1958) then WEYMOUTH (February 1958 – September 1963). The ex S&D shed at Bath was home to over 50 locos including the famous S&D 2-8-0s. Transferred to the WR, becoming 82F, it exchanged codes with ex-GWR Weymouth shed, whose 20 GWR locos now sported the SR code. In September 1963 the depot received SR locos and was recoded 70G. Repainted front, the back in ex-loco condition.£200
38ALUMINIUM WORKSPLATE: “METROPOLITAN-VICKERS 1958” believed to have been carried by the BR Type 2 Co-Bo Class 28 loco D5701. New to 17A Derby in August 1958, it was withdrawn from D10 Preston division in September 1968, and cut up by J Cashmore, Great Bridge in October 1969. The part number “M2171” is stamped into the back. Rectangular, 18” x 5”, the front is in the original BR green, but varnished, the back in ex-loco condition.£2600
39LONDON & BIRMINGHAM RAILWAY POLICEMAN’S WOODEN TRUNCHEON. Painted in black with the crown of Queen Victoria in gold at the top, the coat of arms of the London & Birmingham Railway below it (company name in garter), the issuing number of the truncheon “69” and some floral decorations. Nicely turned ribbed handle. 18” long, 1⅝” diameter in VGC with minimal service wear and tear. The London & Birmingham Railway operated between the two cities from July 1837, until amalgamated with the Grand Junction and Manchester & Birmingham Railways to form the LNWR in July 1846.£600
40TOTEM: STANTON GATE. BR(M) fully flanged maroon in excellent condition with deep colour and shine, a couple of minor flange chips and a little flange rusting only. An ex-MR station between Trent and Chesterfield on the Erewash Valley line, opened July 1851, closed January 1967. A scarce totem offered only four times previously at auction.£1150
 LOTS 41-46: PULLMAN CAR ITEMS 
41CARRIAGE BOARD: “GOLDEN ARROW” in cast aluminium, 79” x 7” fully flanged. Hand painted in brown with the words “Golden Arrow” in cream with black shading and a large three-flight arrow in gold and cream. These were introduced from 1949 for the famous train - replacing earlier post-war painted inscriptions on each vehicle. Originally made of wood and subsequently metal. They slotted into clips on the car sides and were secured by wing clips. Two versions were used: one designated 'Fleche d'or'; the other 'Golden Arrow.' They remained in use until about 1969. Good ex-vehicle condition. £1500
42PULLMAN CARS SILVERPLATE 1 PINT COFFEE POT manufactured by Mappin & Webb. 3¼” diameter base, 7¼” tall plus handle and spout.. The Pullman coat of arms with the wording “Pullman Car Company Limited” in garter around them are clearly incised on the side. Good condition£150
43PULLMAN CAR silvered brass electric TABLE LAMP from the Parlour Car “RUTH.” Octagonal base, which shape is followed all along the stem in a very art-deco style. 6” x 6” base, 20½” tall with a square finial on the top. The name “Ruth” is clearly stamped in the base at the electrical input. Complete with pink Perspex shade. The lamp has been fitted with a standard 3-Pin mains plug (not tested). Pullman composite car “Ruth” was constructed by Metropolitan Cammell in 1932 and was formed in SR Electric unit № 2017 (later 3017). During World War II “Ruth” was substantially damaged and required complete rebuilding. It was withdrawn in April 1966 and eventually sold for preservation. In good condition overall although much of the silver is now missing£850
44PULLMAN CAR COMPANY original gold leaf transfer COAT OF ARMS showing two lions holding shield with “Pullman” in scroll at base. Mounted on dark black painted board and housed in a glazed wooden frame 20” x 18” in VGC.£55
45PULLMAN CAR brass electric TABLE LAMP from the second class parlour Car № 62. Square base, 4½” x 4½”, 19” tall with an thistle finial on the top. The legend “SC62” is clearly stamped in the base. The shade, unfortunately, is missing. The lamp has been fitted with a standard 3-Pin mains plug (not tested). Car № 62 was constructed by the Midland Railway Carriage & Wagon Ltd in 1927 as a third-class parlour car, but not used for Pullman service until 1928. Employed thereafter as a non-supplement second-class dining car on the Harwich boat trains until 1939. Post-war, № 62 was remodelled as a brake car and used extensively on the Eastern Region before final service on the “Bournemouth Belle.” It was withdrawn in September 1966 and subsequently scrapped. In good condition.£350
46RAILWAY EXECUTIVE (E) D/R POSTER: THE QUEEN OF SCOTS PULLMAN (Reginald Mayes 1901-1992). This is poster art at its best: bold simple and direct. Superb artwork from the early 1950s makes this poster highly collectable. Also issued by the Scottish Region around the same time. Rolled, VGC.£2100

47SHEDPLATE: 35C PETERBOROUGH (SPITAL). This former MR shed, previously LMS then LMR 16B, was home to 55 locos during the 1950s. In 1958 it became 31F and closed in February 1960. Front repainted, the back in ex-loco condition. Drawing/casting numbers are stamped on the front. A scarce example, seldom offered at auction.£450
48BRASS WORKSPLATE: “YORKSHIRE ENGINE Co Limited Meadow-Hall Works Sheffield № 2571 1954” as carried by the 0-6-0ST with 18” x 26” inside cylinders delivered new to United Steel Companies Ltd, Frodingham Ironstone Mines, Scunthorpe as their № 24. One of eight “Austerity” class locos assembled by the Yorkshire Engine Co using components supplied by the Hunslet Engine Co., Leeds. The loco was scrapped on site at Scunthorpe circa February 1965. Oval, 11” x 6”, face restored, back ex-loco. Mounted on a hardwood backing plate with a framed photograph of the loco in service above.£200
49GWR GUARDS POCKET WATCH manufactured by Limit № 2. The initials “GWR” in pre-Grouping style and the number “0.1835” are incised on the back. Swiss Made 15 jewel movement. Inside the back cover the serial number 3202655 is inscribed. Face bears the makers name, the words “Non-Magnetic” and “Swiss Made.” Roman numerals and a second hand. Appears to be in good working order.£100
50LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “LYTHAM ST ANNES” as carried by Type 4 1Co-Co1 Class 45 “Peak” loco D60, later 45022. New to 17A Derby in February 1962, a product of Crewe works, it was named without ceremony on 1st May 1964, its claim to fame being the only Class 45 Peak not to be named after a Regiment. The highlight of its career was that it had the distinction of hauling the final 1M82 Edinburgh – St Pancras over the Waverley route. This final train was heavily delayed by locals protesting at the closure of the route and made the national news media. 45022 was withdrawn in July 1987, but was renumbered into departmental stock as 97409, for use on the northern end of the ECML electrification scheme. It was finally withdrawn in 1991 and taken to MC Metals Glasgow for cutting in October of that year. Cast aluminium mounted to a steel backboard, 55” x 6” professionally restored in maroon with polished letters, the back in ex-loco condition.£7200
51LMS CARRIAGE PANEL: TILBURY & SOUTHEND LINES DIAGRAM originally drawn by George Dow with monogram and dated 1935.  Shows the lines from Fenchurch Street with connections to the Underground system. St Pancras is also shown. Extensive use of art-deco style lettering. Reference ERO 53226. Excellent condition and in original glazed wooden frame. 52GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY three-aspect HANDLAMP stamped “GNR W” with the dated “9/99” (September 1899) on the reducing cone. Piecrust chimney top. The body stamped “LNE-E” and “GB” is brass plated in GNR style with embossed wording “London & North Eastern Railway” and stamped “Hitchin Gds.” Bevel-edged front lens. Innards comprise unmarked reservoir, burner and reflector. All internal glasses complete and intact. Restored to VGC.£110
53WORKSPLATE: “THE ENGLISH ELECTRIC Co Ltd Vulcan Works Newton-le-Willows England № 3526/D955 1965” as carried by Type 3 Co-Co Class 37 loco D6966, later 37266 and 37422. New to 41A Tinsley in February 1965, it was named “CARDIFF CANTON,” as 37422 in January 2003. It is currently stored out of use at TO Toton. Rectangular, chromed cast brass, 10¼” x 4½” in ex-loco condition front, the back cleaned.£300
54EAST AFRICAN RAILWAYS BRASS CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: 2925 from the 29 Class 2-8-2 tender locomotive, built by NBL in 1955 with works number 27440.  Also known as the Tribal Class, 2925 was named "NYIKA", after a tribe in East Africa. The loco was withdrawn from service in 1980. Rectangular, 27” x 9” face repainted in primer, brass lightly polished, back original.£180
55SOUTHERN RAILWAY TARGET SIGN: REIGATE. 28” x 13” in good condition with deep colour and shine, a couple of edge chips, but with a little rust staining in the white letters. From an ex-SE&CR station between Dorking Town and Betchworth opened as Reigate Town in July 1849, the suffix removed in November 1898, still open today.£300
56LNER TYER’S “F” pattern wooden cased BLOCK INSTRUMENT the glazed face dials both showing “Down Line” and three position “Train on Line”, Line Blocked” and “Line Clear.” A Bakelite knob at the base turns to show the same three positions against a circular brass plate. A small tapper is also present. The trafolite labels “Down Slow № 1 to Finsbury Park № 3” at the top and “Down Slow № 1 From Holloway South Down” underneath the glazed display. This instrument was located in Holloway North Down signal box, a 1948 built 70 lever LNER Type 15 design box at the southern end of the East Coast Main Line. The labels show the instrument unusually worked to two signal boxes on the same line rather than the usual one signal box on two lines. Finsbury Park № 3 signal box closed in April 1975, the Holloway boxes closing in August 1976. 11¾” x 9½” base, 18¾” high. Very good ex-box condition.£620

Hull Botanic Gardens, another ex-NER shed, became a purpose built diesel maintenance facility, and many DMU vehicles and locos carried this code. 58ALUMINIUM SINGLE LINE TABLET: “SUDBURY – CHAPPEL 15” from the ex-GER section which came into existence in September 1965 when Bures signal box closed and the token section was extended to between Sudbury Goods and Chappel signal boxes, and ceased to exist in 1967 when the Marks Tey to Sudbury line was converted to “one engine in steam” working. Very good ex-section condition.£90
59NEWCASTLE & CARLISLE RAILWAY. A silverplate COFFEE POT in a wonderfully ornate design with much incising of flowers, leaves and embossing on the sides, lid and handle. A section on one side is inscribed “Presented to Mr Edward Lewins by the Agents of the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway Company as a mark of respect on his leaving the service of the company 22nd October 1859.” No manufacturers mark noted. 6½” diameter bowl size, 8½” to top of lid plus handle and spout. The N&CR opened in March 1835 and was amalgamated with the NER in July 1862. In exceptional condition.£320

It lost these plates in October 1993, and was re named “THE LOCOMOTIVE & CARRIAGE INSTITUTION,” at Bristol Temple Meads station in December 1995. Withdrawn in February 2001, it was cut up by Booth Roe Rotherham in October 2002. Oval, 9¼” x 5⅝” restored front, the back cleaned.£420

75LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “BUCKINGHAM.” In keeping with standard LNWR practice, the legend “L&NWR – Crewe Works” and the build date “Augt. 1917” are also shown. The plate was carried by Bowen Cooke design LNWR “Claughton” Class 4-6-0 № 986, LMS № 5390 and then later № 5953. Built at Crewe and taken into stock in September 1917. Named in March 1922 and carried until withdrawn on 26 September 1936. The name owes itself to Richard Grenville who was Chairman of the LNWR  between 1853 and 1861 and who was also Marquis of Buckingham. This was the third time the name had been used by the LNWR as it was also applied to "Newton" Class 2-4-0 № 1289 and  "Renewed Precedent" Class  2-4-0 № 3070. 72” long with scalloped corners, 5½” at widest. A couple of the letters have a little of the wax infill missing and the plate is a little bent where it was removed from the loco, in very good condition generally though. “Claughton” class nameplates are rare.£10800

These very attractive motifs were originally affixed to the sides of the then new 25kv AC Overhead Electric Locomotives (Classes AL1-AL6, later classes 81-86) constructed for the Euston – Manchester and Liverpool electrification from 1958 onwards. They were replaced by the later BR “double-arrow” symbol in the mid 1960s. 18” x 18½” overall in good, completely original condition, front and back. All verified serial numbers cast and stamped in the back.£500

93BRASS LOCOMOTIVE APPROVAL PLATE: “G&B Ltd Type GB14DE Storage battery locomotive Approved by The Ministry of Fuel and Power Approval № 37.” Greenwood and Batley Ltd of Leeds fitted these plates to their mines locomotives to show that they were compliant with the regulations applicable to them for working in underground conditions. They were carried in addition to the conventional worksplates and were fitted either just above or just below these or in the cab. This example was carried by a  4 Wheeled Type 14 Double Ended (DE) battery electric flameproof machine which had a cab and driving controls at both ends. Rectangular 9⅞” x 4⅞” in ex-loco condition both sides.£45

Twin plungers below this, one red, one white, with large flap to prevent the wrong plunger being used and another smaller brass reminder flap, with “Train on Line” and “Train Passed.” An ivorine plate bears the name “Breydon Junction” and is thought to have originated from Yarmouth Vauxhall signal box. 99ORIGINAL OIL ON CANVAS ARTWORK: “’DUCHESS OF NORFOLK’ ON UP ‘ROYAL SCOT’ AT BUSHEY TROUGHS” by Barry G Price. A wonderfully detailed c.1950 study of the loco painted in early BR main line express passenger blue livery hauling a train of ex-LMS stock in maroon and in “blood and custard” liveries. The train is seen overtaking an up stopping passenger train on the slow lines hauled by a Stanier “Black 5.” A soggy wet scene and the looming clouds overhead and watery sun look as though they are going to add more water to the overflowing troughs. Stanier LMS Class 8P 4-6-2 Pacific "Duchess of Norfolk" was built at Crewe in 1938 as part of Lot 145 and numbered 6226 (BR 46226). It was originally streamlined and fitted with a single chimney which was replaced with a double chimney in 1942. The streamlining was removed in 1948 one of the last three locos so treated.  It finished its days at Carlisle Upperby being withdrawn from there in September 1964 and sent to Arnott Young at Troon where it was scrapped in February 1965. Painted in 2010 and not seen previously at auction. The copyright is owned by the artist. 25” x 20” (frame size) and in VGC.£450
100GWR LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “WALTON GRANGE” as carried by Collett GWR “Grange” class 4-6-0 loco № 6849 built  at Swindon in October 1937. First shed allocation was Oxley. By August 1950 it was shedded at Bristol St. Philip's Marsh and by March 1959 could be found at Plymouth Laira. Its last shed allocation was Oxford from where it was withdrawn in December 1965. Scrapped at Cashmore's, Newport, the following May. The nameplate is fully beaded, 68” x 13½” , brasswork lightly polished only, but in ex-loco condition in every other respect, both sides. A well-balanced 6-6 nameplate.N/S

Red painted with black lining, a glazed dial on the front with needle indicator, a rotating brass knob with settings for “Key In” and “Key Out” and a small plunger marked “Bell.” Metal maker’s plate on front “Tyer & Co Ltd., London & Carlisle”. Slots and slides at the front for accepting and dispensing tokens. No tokens remaining in the machine. The arched cover can be removed to reveal the innards which are complete. The West Riding & Grimsby Railway ran from Wakefield to Stainforth in Yorkshire with a branch. It opened in February 1866 and was transferred jointly to the GNR and MS&LR in June the same year. The MS&LR became GCR in August 1897. Grouped into the LNER in January 1923.£50

New to 5H Crewe Electric in October 1965, it was named “INTERCONTAINER” as 86605, at Harwich Parkeston Quay station in June 1991. The plates were removed in November 1996. The loco is still in service with Freightliner. Rectangular, 8½” x 6½” face repainted in rail blue, the back in ex-loco condition. The number “86005” is clearly stamped on the back.£300
114SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS SINGLE LANGUAGE BRASS CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: 810 16BR from the 3’ 6” gauge South African Railways 4-6-2 Pacific loco built by North British Loco Company works № 21500 in 1917. Actually a 16CR (there was never a 16BR class, although some 16Bs simply had the letter “R” brazed on).  All 16B's became 16CR on rebuild. Last allocated to Sydenham, scrapped in May 1978 at Uitenhage Works. Oval, 20½” x 14½” in good unrestored condition, the centre background painted green, outside unpainted, the back also in ex-loco condition.£800
115LMS ENAMEL STATION TABLET SIGN: BOLTON TRINITY STREET in yellow with black lettering and border. Apart from a small chip around one of the fixing holes, the sign is in immaculate condition. We believe this was one of the last produced by the LMS prior to Nationalisation and may never have been used due to the changes in ownership. From an ex-L&YR station opened as Bolton In May 1838, renamed Bolton Trinity Street in 1910, the suffix was dropped in 1954, still open today. 20” x 6½.£280
116SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE 60983 as carried by Gresley LNER Class V2 2-6-2 built at Darlington and numbered 3695 in July 1944 and the LAST OF THE CLASS. New to Doncaster, it was allocated to Gorton for 19 months from March 1945 to October 1946, but then settled down to almost 16 years at Kings Cross during which time it gained its BR identity 60983 in March 1950. It was withdrawn from Grantham in September 1962 and scrapped at Doncaster in the following January. Repainted front and back.£620
117SHEDPLATE 37B COPLEY HILL (1949 – October 1956). This ex-GNR shed had 40 locos in the early 1950s, which included 5 A3s and 10 A1s. It was recoded 56C and closed in September 1964. 120TOTEM: STRATFORD. BR (E) fully flanged dark blue in excellent condition with deep colour and shine. Located to the east of London on the Liverpool Street – Colchester main line, the station opened in June 1839 and is the junction for connecting lines to all parts of the capital. It was the location of the main loco and carriage works for the Great Eastern Railway and the steam depot there once boasted the largest allocation of locomotives in the country. Now an international interchange station on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link and it will be host to the 2012 Olympic Games. A scarce totem offered only four times previously at auction.£1950

122GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY three- aspect copper top HANDLAMP with nicely polished lifting copper dome with a copper clasp to reveal chimney underneath. The body side bears an oval brass label “1186.” Bevel –edged front lens etched “GWR” with copper lens reducing cone. Innards comprise copper reservoir stamped “GWR” “7”, GWR burner and unmarked reflector. All internal glasses complete and intact. Restored to VGC. Very attractive.N/S
123ENGRAVED BRASS WORKSPLATE: “BUILT BY (& ON LOAN TO) LONDON NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY Co Darlington Works № 1932 1944” as carried by Stanier design Class 8F 2-8-0 № 48501. Built to the order of the Railway Executive Committee under Lot 162 and initially loaned to the LNER. Withdrawn from Heaton Mersey shed in July 1967 and scrapped by Cashmore's at Great Bridge in the November. As is common with these plates, the words “& On Loan to” has been erased. Oval, 13¼” x 7¾” face polished, back ex-loco with loco number painted on.£340
124BR(W) ORIGINAL WOODEN PATTERN FOR THE LOCOMOTIVE HEADBOARD: “THE ROYAL DUCHY” used to cast the aluminium headboard for carrying on the train. It comes complete with the “Shop Copy” of the original drawings and specifications dated 1960. The drawings show all details of dimensions, sizes, lettering, motif, colouring and finishes. 125BRASS LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “MENELAUS” as carried by the standard gauge 0-6-0ST built by Peckett works № 1889 in 1934. New in December 1934 to Insoles Ltd., Cymmer Collieries, Porth, and named "ROSA". To Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd. in November 1939 where it received the name "MENELAUS". It was acquired for preservation by the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway but moved to the Vale of Glamorgan Railway in February 1997. It remained there for about two years before transferring to the Caledonian Railway Ltd at Brechin where it currently resides. 35” x 6” restored front, brass lightly polished, the back original.£1250

133BRASS WORKSPLATE: “BRITISH RAILWAYS BUILT DERBY 1950 Power Equipment by Fell Developments Ltd” as carried by the unique BR 2-D-2 2,000HP diesel mechanical loco 10100 designed jointly by H.G. Ivatt and the Fell company in the final years of the LMS. Emerging in 1950 allocated to 17A Derby, it worked on the Manchester to London St Pancras passenger service. It became BR property in 1955 and was withdrawn in September 1958 suffering from serious gearbox damage. It was cut up at Derby works in February 1960. The Fell system was invented by Lt Col LFR Fell and developed by HG Ivatt and Fell developments Ltd. The lot is accompanied by three B&W photos of the loco in service taken by Peter Gater in the 1950s. Oval, 10¾” x 6¼” restored face, ex-loco condition back. Unique.£3800
134CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: D1032 from a Type 4 C-C Class 52 diesel hydraulic loco named “WESTERN MARKSMAN.” Built at Crewe in December 1963, and delivered new to 81A Old Oak Common, it was withdrawn from LA Laira in May 1973 and cut up at Swindon works in December 1974. Rectangular 34” x10” front repainted, the back in ex-loco condition. Aluminium numerals and trim riveted to a steel backplate. The edge trimming looks to have been neatly replaced at the right hand end.£2300

136SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 61761 as carried by Gresley GNR Class H3/ LNER and BR Class K2 2-6-0 built by the North British Locomotive Company in 1918 and numbered 1671. It later became LNER № 4671 then after 1946 № 1761 and 61761 in BR days.  It is known to have spent some time at Stratford and in the mid-1950s it was a Boston engine. It was later to be found at Sheffield Darnall and on withdrawal in January 1961 it was allocated to King's Cross. Scrapped at Doncaster Works in February 1961. Repainted front, the back in ex-loco condition.£750
137GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY wooden cased pegging BLOCK INSTRUMENT. Glazed window with dial marked “Up Line” with “Train on Line”, “Line Clear” and “Line Blocked” positions. Handle with trigger below. Above the glazed window is an ivorine label “Excursion From Crescent Jnc.” Crescent Junction signal box was an 1875 built GNR Type 1 design signal box located at the south end of Peterborough station closing in March 1973 when signalling passed to Peterborough panel box. The Excursion line ran towards North Box. Base 10¾” x 6½” and stands 19½” high. Restored to VGC.£90

144GWR TREGENNA CASTLE HOTEL SILVERPLATE SINGLE HANDLED BOWL. 4¾” diameter bowl, 2¾” tall plus handle. The initials “GWR” in script with the wording “Tregenna Castle Hotel” in garter around them are clearly incised on the side. The “Tregenna Castle Hotel” located at St Ives, Cornwall, was originally built in 1874 and leased to the GWR in 1878, eventually bought outright in 1895. It was sold by British Transport Hotels in 1983 and is still open today. VGC.£160

146BR(W) SWINDON WORKS CONSTRUCTED SCALE MODEL of an Automatic Coupler (known as “Buckeye” coupler) which was new to the Western Region with the introduction of BR Mark 1 coaches in the early 1950s. The model was used to give instructions at local depots in the use of this “new” device (it had been in use on other railways/regions for some time previously). Stands on a wooden board 32” x 8” in full working order and bears an ivorine label “British Railways Automatic Coupler (Drop Head) BR Swindon.”.£850
147SHEDPLATE: 75F TUNBRIDGE WELLS WEST (1948 – June 1965). This ex-LBSCR shed maintained a total of 25 locos in the 1950s, but although losing its allocation in 1963, it went on servicing locos for another two years until final closure in June 1965. Front repainted, the back in ex-loco condition with the BR(S) triangle clearly seen. A scarce example, seldom offered at auction.N/S

150LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “THORPE HALL” as carried by Gresley LNER Class B17/1 4-6-0 designed for the Great Eastern section and fitted with GE type tender. Built at Darlington in March 1933 and named after the home of Viscount Byng near Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex. Originally numbered 2837 and then 1637 in 1946 becoming 61637 in BR days.  In the 1950s it could be found at Ipswich and was withdrawn from there in September 1959 being scrapped almost immediately at Doncaster Works. Cast brass, 17½” x 6¾” restored face some time ago, the back in ex-loco condition with traces of apple green paint evident beneath the lugs.£6000

Wonderful drawing skills characterize this poster for Mechelen in Belgium (Malines is the French name), where the catholic bishop for the whole of Belgium resides. 176SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 60104 as carried by Gresley LNER Class A1 4-6-2 Pacific "SOLARIO" (converted in 1941 to Class A3) built Doncaster works № 1555 in 1923 and ex-works on the 17 March. At first numbered 1473 and then in 1924 № 4473 and after 1946 № 104 becoming 60104 in BR days.  It was initially allocated to Doncaster and during its career spent time at Copley Hill, Gorton, King's Cross, Leicester and Neasden. It was withdrawn from Grantham shed in December 1959, the first of the Class to go, and was scrapped at Doncaster Works the following month.  Solario was named after a racehorse owned by Sir John Rutherford and won the 1925 St Leger at Doncaster. The front stripped of paint, although small traces are still evident, numbers repainted, the back in ex-loco condition.£3700

New to 5A Crewe North in 1959, it was named “CARINTHIA Cunard Lines,” in June 1962. Withdrawn in February 1981 from KD Carlisle Kingmoor, it was cut up at Swindon Works in August 1981. Rectangular, 10” x 4½”, restored front, the back cleaned. Most of the original chromium plating still visible on the back.£3400

184EAST AFRICAN RAILWAYS BRASS CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: 3145 as carried by the EAR 31 class (also known as the “Tribal” Class) 2-8-4 tender locomotive. Built by Vulcan Foundry at Newton-le-Willows in 1955, with works number 6272, the locomotive was shipped to Kenya and placed into service in 1956. The loco was named "TSOTO." Rectangular 17½” x 6½” face repainted some time ago, brass polished, the back in ex-loco condition.£280
185LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “WESTERN HARRIER” as carried by a Type 4 C-C Class 52 diesel hydraulic. Built at Swindon works in 1962, it was delivered new to 83D Laira in September. It was withdrawn from there in October 1974 and cut up at Swindon works in October 1975. Aluminium letters and edging screwed/riveted to a steel backboard in ex-loco condition both sides, except that the letters have been repainted in silver, which may have been done by Swindon Works at final overhaul. Complete with matching CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: D1008 from the same locomotive. Sadly the letter “D” and one of the “0s” are missing from an otherwise ex-loco condition plate. 187GWR ROYAL HOTEL SILVERPLATE PICKLE JAR HOLDER manufactured by Elkington. 6” diameter saucer base, 5” tall. The GWR coat of arms, initials “GWR” in block letters and the wording “Great Western Railway Royal Hotel” in scroll garter below are clearly incised on the side. The hotel, an integral part of Paddington station in London, was opened in June 1854 and quickly developed a reputation for high standards of comfort and elegance. The hotel was sold by BR in 1983 and is still open today. VGC.£300

196SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 4161 as carried by Collett GWR Class 5101 2-6-2T built at Swindon in September 1948. This class of 290 large Prairie tank locomotives was produced between 1903 and 1949, this loco being one of the final batch. In the mid-1950s it could be found at Merthyr. It was withdrawn from Worcester in November 1965 and scrapped by Cashmore's at Newport in July 1966. Completely devoid of paint and showing signs of having been stored in a shed for many years.£250
197SHEDPLATE: 4B SWANSEA (1935 – July 1950), then NORTHAMPTON (July 1950 – March 1952). The ex-LNWR shed at Swansea had 50 locos when using this LMS pattern code. It was then transferred to the WR becoming 87K. The ex-LNWR shed at Northampton, formerly 2C, used this code for only a very short period of time. It later became 2E and finally 1H. May 1965 saw it based at Southall and its last shed was Oxford from where it was withdrawn in December 1965. Scrapped at Cashmore's, Newport, in June 1966. 206LIFEBELT FROM THE BR HUMBER FERRY “WINGFIELD CASTLE” registered in Grimsby. Polo shaped, red and white striped with rope attached, 30” in diameter. The Paddle Steamer “Wingfield Castle” was built William Gray & Company at Hartlepool, and launched in 1934, along with a sister ship, the “Tattershall Castle.” A third similar vessel, the “Lincoln Castle” (not built in Hartlepool), was launched in 1940. She is now preserved at the Museum of Hartlepool as a floating exhibit at Jackson Dock, as part of the visitor attraction known as "Hartlepool's Maritime Experience." VGC.£100

220THE LOCOMOTIVE “ALTONIA.” A Baguley built 2ft gauge steam outline 0-4-0 diesel locomotive “Altonia”. Originally built as works number 1769 in May 1929 and delivered to the Lilleshall Hall Railway. After WW2, the railway at Lilleshall closed and by the early 1950s the locomotive had found its way to Alton Towers to be used on their miniature railway which ran between 1953 and 1999. Originally built with a Baguley 15hp petrol engine, it was fitted with a 27hp Perkins diesel engine in 1963 and it still has this engine today. It was named “Altonia” sometime between 1966 and 1969. It was purchased by the current owner from Alton Towers in 2002. This locomotive is now offered for sale in a good, well cared for condition with an estimate of £22,000. The locomotive weighs around 2½ tons and is 10ft 6” in length. The eventual purchaser will have to arrange transportation, at their own cost, from a location in Surrey. Further items, including track and two small flat-bed wagons, will be available for purchase by the successful bidder by arrangement with the vendor. New to 34G Finsbury Park in January 1963, it was named “RAIL RIDERS,” at Newcastle Central station in December 1981, to publicise the BR club for young rail travellers. The nameplates were removed in May 1988. Withdrawn in August 1990 from IM Immingham and cut up there in 1995 by MRJ Phillips. Its last shed was Tyseley from where it was withdrawn in October 1965 and scrapped at Cashmore's, Great Bridge, two months later. 233BRASS WORKSPLATE: “SHARP STEWART & Co Limited Atlas Works Glasgow 4691 – 1900” as carried by the SE&CR class C 0-6-0 tender loco which actually entered traffic in January 1901. Became BR 31719 Power Class 2F. It was finally withdrawn from Bricklayers Arms (73B) in May 1962 and scrapped at Ashford Works. A total of 109 locos of this class were built, 15 of them by Shap Stewart. Oval, 9¾” x 6” the front lightly polished, the back original.£580
234FRENCH RAILWAYS BRASS TENDER NUMBERPLATE: “SNCF 30.R.866” as fitted to the tender of SNCF 141R866 a 2-8-2 built by the American Locomotive Company № 73939. At the end of World War 2 there was a shortage of locomotives in France and 1,340 of this design were ordered, based on some Mikados used by the Green Bay & Western Railroad, from the main American and Canadian locomotive builders under the Marshall Plan but only 1,323 entered service as seventeen were lost at sea. Rectangular with rounded corners, 22” x 12” in ex-loco condition front and back.£150

241CARRIAGE PRINT: FORT AUGUSTUS, INVERNESS-SHIRE by Henry Rushbury R.A. from the LNER post-war series approx 1947. Until 1933, it had its own branch line terminus, yet by the time the print emerged, an LMS motor omnibus was conveying the passengers along its 24 mile route instead of a train. Fort Augustus lies about half way along the Caledonian Canal. The fort is situated just at the start of Loch Ness and was built after the 1715 Jacobite Rising and named after the Duke of Sutherland. It shares the site with a 19th century Benedictine abbey and a Roman Catholic school. In an original-style frame and glazed. File copy in excellent condition.£65

243BRASS WORKSPLATE: “LMS BUILT CREWE 1935” as carried by Stanier Class 5XP/6P "Jubilee" 4-6-0 taper-boiler development of the "Patriot" Class. The original 5552 was built at Crewe under Lot 97 and entered service in May 1934. However in April 1935 it permanently swapped numbers with 5642 (later "Boscawen"), which had been built as part of Lot 112 in December 1934, and received the name "SILVER JUBILEE" in honour of the King's Jubilee. Oval, 10½” x 6”, restored. Together with Brass Tender Plate LMS No. 9006 1935, originally attached to loco 5559 “BRITISH COLUMBIA” was fitted to the renumbered loco on the 29th April 1935. Rectangular, 7¾” x 6”, restored. The renumbered "Silver Jubilee" was allocated to various sheds during its lifetime including Camden, Preston, Longsight, Carlisle Upperby, Bushbury, Edge Hill and Crewe North. It was withdrawn from service in September 1964 and was scrapped by Cashmore's at Great Bridge in the following April. Both items attractively mounted to a hardwood backing board. (2)£500

245GWR SIGNALBOX BOARD: “GRIMSTONE & FRAMPTON.” Cast Iron, 102” x 9”. This was a GWR Type 7b design signal box located on the GWR Castle Cary to Dorchester line. It opened in the early years of the 20th century fitted with a 20 lever frame (a nameplate was ordered from Reading signal works in June1904) and closed in April 1966 when the absolute block section was extended to between Maiden Newton and Dorchester West signal boxes. The line was transferred to the Southern Region of BR following Nationalisation, hence there are traces of green paint evident. It is in completely original unrestored condition.£300
246SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 60013 as carried by Gresley LNER Class A4 4-6-2 Pacific loco named "DOMINION OF NEW ZEALAND". Built at Doncaster № 1857 of 1937. Ex-works on the 27th June 1937 and named the following day at King's Cross by the Honourable W.J. Jordan who was the London High Commissioner for New Zealand.  Original LNER number 4492 and then 13 becoming 60013 under BR in 1949. Its first shed was King's Cross and it remained there for most of its career except for stints at Haymarket in 1937/8 and Grantham in 1948/50. Withdrawn on 18 April 1963 from King's Cross and cut up immediately at Doncaster Works. Repainted to VGC both sides. The vendor paid £2 for it from Doncaster Works, but cannot find the receipt!£5000
247SHEDPLATE: 52H TYNE DOCK (February 1958 – September 1967). This ex-NER shed, formerly 54B, was home to 45 locos when it adopted this code. Complete with and attached to “SC” (Self Cleaning (smokebox)) plate with the loco number “ 92098” roughly painted on the back. Loco 92098 was built at Crewe in 1956 and was one of the famous Westinghouse fitted Class 9F 2-10-0s allocated To Tyne Dock for working the heavy iron ore trains to Consett. It was withdrawn from Tyne Dock in  July 1966 when it was just ten years old and was sent to A. Draper at Hull for scrap. Both items repainted front, ex-loco condition backs. (2)£600

Painted in black and showing the crown of Queen Victoria in gold at the top, the initials ”VR” in script and the initials “GER” in block capitals with the date 1868. Nicely turned ribbed handle. 20” long, 1⅞” diameter in good condition a little service wear and tear. An early issue as the Great Eastern did come into existence until 1862.£200
250NAMEPLATE: “COEUR-DE-LION” from the BR “Britannia” class 7P 4-6-2 Pacific loco 70007 built at Crewe to order No. E479/220 designed by R.A. Riddles. Entered service in April 1951 at Stratford and named from new. Allocated to Norwich, the loco worked the new regular interval Liverpool Street – Norwich trains helping to set vastly improved standards for these services until replaced by the English Electric type 4 (later class 40) locos, and then re-allocated to March. Transferred to the LMR at Carlisle (Kingmoor) in December 1963 and withdrawn from there in June 1965, the first of the class to be treated thus. Scrapped at Crewe Works. 47½” x 6” face lightly polished only, the background repainted red with traces of black showing through, the back in ex-loco condition with the number “70007” chalked on.£14500

257SHEDPLATE: 60D WICK (1948 – July 1962). This former Highland Railway shed had a maximum of just 5 locos allocated; most notable being three “Ben” class 4-4-0s. Repainted front and back. A very rare example, only twice previously offered at auction.£500
258LONDON BRIGHTON & SOUTH COAST RAILWAY Tyer’s one wire two position wooden cased BLOCK INSTRUMENT with glazed aperture showing miniature signal arms for “Up Train on Line” and “Down Train on Line.” Below this is an enamel plate bearing the name “Barcombe Mills” and two brass plungers below that. At the base below the block instrument is a boxed plunger and located above it is the section bell. All three items are attached to a stout wooden board which was attached to the signalbox shelf. The instrument was recovered from Isfield signalbox which is an 1877 built Saxby & Farmer Type 5 design signal box located on the LBSCR Groombridge to Lewes line. The original 13 lever Saxby & Farmer Rocker frame was extended to 16 levers in 1905 and the box closed in February 1969 along with Barcombe Mills signal box when the line between Uckfield and Lewes was closed. The box remained becoming derelict until restored in the mid 1980s and is now part of the Lavender Line. 39” x 15” overall, in good unrestored condition. See also Lot 8.£1100

From an ex-SE&CR North Kent station between Swanley and Rochester opened as Fawkham by the LC&DR in June 1872, renamed Fawkham for Hartley & Longfield by 1910 and renamed Longfield for Fawkham & Hartley in June 1961 when this totem would have been produced. The suffix was dropped in 1968. A scarce totem.£700

266SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 90631 as carried by Riddles Ministry of Supply Class WD 2-8-0 built by Vulcan Foundry in March 1944. Its original WD number was 78626 and it was shipped to Europe after D Day. Its repatriation to Britain was delayed and it was used in Germany until early 1947 due to motive power shortages. It was purchased by BR in December 1948 and was renumbered 90631 in May 1949. It was a long time Wakefield engine being recorded there in the 1950s and was withdrawn from that shed in January 1967. Scrapped by Arnott Young at Parkgate in April 1967. Repainted front and back.N/S

By the end of steam, it also hosted 13 A1s and the ever present V2 named loco 60872 “King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.” Repainted front and back.£100

275BRASS LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “COLWYN” as carried by the standard gauge 0-6-0ST named delivered new to Stewarts and Lloyds (later British Steel) at Corby where it bore the number 45. In February 1969 it moved to Storefield Quarry and in June 1971 was acquired by the North Norfolk Railway for preservation moving via Glendon East Quarry for loading onto road transport. 285BR(W) ORIGINAL WOODEN PATTERN FOR THE LOCOMOTIVE HEADBOARD: “CAMBRIAN COAST EXPRESS” used to cast the aluminium headboard for carrying on the train. It comes complete with the “Shop Copy” of the original drawings and specifications dated 1960. The drawings show all details of dimensions, sizes, lettering, motif, colouring and finishes. The board measures 53” width, 10¼” at the widest part, plus another 9½” for the half dragon/half rose crest. Beautifully crafted and in VGC. See also Lot 124. (2)£1750
286SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 63771 (with curved “6”) as carried by Robinson Great Central design 2-8-0 produced for the ROD with steam brake only and no water scoop. Built by the North British Locomotive Company in April 1918. Became LNER Class O4/3 № 6270 then in 1946 № 3771 becoming 63771 under BR.  In 1955 it was a Sheffield Darnall loco. Withdrawn from Retford GC shed in November 1962 and scrapped at Doncaster Works in October 1963. The back bears the casting number 17281C and also shows the loco classes with the same radius smokebox doors. Repainted front and back.£520
287SHEDPLATE: 83F TRURO (1948 – March 1962), then Barnstaple Junction (September 1963 – September 1964). The ex-GWR shed at Truro had around 25 locos allocated throughout the 1950s. Although it lost its last two locos in 1962, it carried on servicing visiting locos until closure in November 1965. The ex-LSWR shed at Barnstaple Junction, formerly 72E, was transferred to the WR in December 1962, but only adopted this code in September 1963. At this time it was home to 13 Ivatt 2-6-2Ts. Front repainted, the back in ex-loco condition. A scarce example, seldom offered at auction.£300
288GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY wooden cased BLOCK INSTRUMENT. Glazed window with “Line Occupied”, “Line Clear” and “Line Blocked” positions. Handle with trigger below. Below the glazed window is a label “Down Goods 2 From Balby Jct.” Balby Junction signal box was located on the GNR East Coast Main Line south of Doncaster station and the instrument would have been located in Bridge Junction signal box, an 1878 built GNR Type1 design signal box which closed in July 1979 although Balby Junction had closed in July 1978. Base 10¾” x 6½” and stands 18½” high. Restored to VGC.£100

Even with the rundown of steam north of the border it still hosted around 30 locos in its final 18 months as a steam depot. Repainted front and back.£75
298GWR SINGLE LINE STEEL AND ALUMINIUM HOOP complete with an aluminium SINGLE LINE KEY TOKEN for the section “Copplestone – Morchard Road” the section names being engraved onto a brass label which has been riveted to the key token which shows signs of red paint underneath. The aluminium holder has the initials “GWR” and number “1010” cut into the reverse. This token section was located on the LSWR Coleford Junction to Barnstaple line. Key tokens replaced Tyers № 3 tablets in March 1952 and ceased to exist in March 1964 when Morchard Road signal box closed and the section was extended to between Copplestone and Lapford signal boxes. 22½” long, hoop 10” diameter. Good ex-section condition.£200
299ORIGINAL OIL ON CANVAS ARTWORK: “’ROYAL SCOT’ IN 1938 ‘DUCHESS OF RUTLAND’ On DILLICAR TROUGHS” by Barry G Price. A detailed study of the loco painted in maroon with gold stripes making good time on this heavy train on a fine sunny summer’s day. Stanier LMS Class 8P 4-6-2 Pacific "Duchess of Rutland" was built at Crewe in 1938 as part of Lot 145 and numbered 6228 (BR 46228). It was originally streamlined and fitted with a single chimney which was replaced with a double chimney in 1940. By 1959 it had gained two A3s, and remarkably SR D class 4-4-0 31737 stored pending preservation, as well. It received an allocation of 10 A1s in 1962, which replaced its 5 ageing A2s. Repainted front and back. Casting numbers “W793” and “17449” are stamped into the front. A scarce example, seldom offered at auction.£240

Sold to Gresford Colliery c.1915 and almost immediately loaned to Haford Colliery for a short time. Sold to Cudworth and Johnson at Wrexham after October 1936 but before May 1942. By 1946 it could be found in a dismantled state at Cudworth's Rhosddu site, but the repairs that were proposed were never carried out and the loco was never reassembled. 40¼” x 4⅝” restored face, brass lightly polished only, the back original.£600

Very unusual in that it has a symbol in blue on white of a female head within a six-sided panel next to the word “Ladies.” We believe this sign originated from Harwich Parkeston Quay and was for the benefit of overseas travellers not familiar with English. 36” x 12” in VGC. 327SHEDPLATE: 62B DUNDEE TAY BRIDGE (1949 – May 1967). This ex-NBR shed had a substantial allocation of around 100 locos in the 1950s, but by late 1965 this had dwindled to just 30. However, this did include the last three active LNER A2s “Tudor Minstrel”, “Sayajirao” and “Blue Peter.” Front repainted, the back in ex-loco condition.£140
328ALUMINIUM SINGLE LINE KEY TOKEN: “GOBOWEN SOUTH – OSWESTRY NORTH” from the former GWR branch. The section ceased to exist on in November 1970 when Oswestry North and South signal boxes closed and the Gobowen South to Nantmawr Quarry Sidings line became “one train working.” Good ex-section condition with traces of red paint.£60

The body side bears a GNR style brass label embossed “London & North Eastern Railway” and is stamped “Skegness.” Innards comprise unmarked reservoir, LNER burner and unmarked reflector. Unfortunately, the amber glass is missing from the internal lenses, otherwise all present and intact. Bevel-edged front lens. From an ex-GNR Lincolnshire location, famous for its bracing breezes, the station opened in July 1873. Good condition.£240
333BRASS WORKSPLATE: “NORTH BRITISH LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY Ltd Glasgow Queen’s Park Works № 22074 1919.” A rare plate from a Drummond design Glasgow and South Western Railway Class 3F 0-6-2T twenty-eight of which were built between 1915 and 1919. They were numbered 1 – 28 in G&SWR stock and initially 16400-27 by the LMS before being renumbered 16900-27 to make way for the “Jinties.” 16905 was the only G&SWR to come into BR ownership but was scrapped before it could be given its new number 56905. Diamond shape, 13” x 5¼” in ex-loco condition front and back.£520
334SOUTH AFRICAN RAILWAYS/SAS DUAL-LANGUAGE BRASS CABSIDE NUMBERPLATE: 3785 S2 from the 3’ 6” gauge South African Railways 0-8-0 loco built in 1953 by Krupp with works number 3050.  Latterly based at Germiston Depot, which interestingly only had a couple of these. Withdrawn around 1980 and scrapped at Germiston in January 1986. Oval, 20½” x 14½” in ex-loco condition front and back with plenty of knocks and scrapes of a lifetime in service.£200
335LMS ENAMEL STATION TABLET SIGN: BURY KNOWSLEY STREET in yellow with black lettering and border, chips around fixing holes and in one corner, some edge chipping and rusting also, but good colour and shine. From an ex-L&YR station opened as Bury in May 1848, renamed Bury Market Place in February 1866 and finally Bury Knowsley Street in 1888, closed October 1970. 17” x 4½”.£260
336EAST AFRICAN RAILWAY BRASS SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 3103 as carried by the EAR 31 Class (also known as the “Tribal” Class) 2-8-4 tender locomotive. Built by Vulcan Foundry at Newton-le-Willows in 1955, with works number 6230, the locomotive was immediately shipped to Kenya and placed into service in 1955. Named "ACHOLI", the nameplates were later removed when 3103 was renamed "UGANDA." 17¼” x 6½” repainted face some time ago, brass lightly polished, the back in ex-loco condition.£100
337SHEDPLATE: 85A WORCESTER (1949 – December 1965). This ex-GWR shed was home to 80 locos in the 1950s, including “Bulldogs”, “Stars”, “Castles”, “Halls” and “Granges.” Even in its final year it hosted 6 “Halls” and 5 “Granges” in a total of 24 locos. Repainted front, the back cleaned and painted with the number 7004. This would indicate the plate was carried by Collett “Castle” Class 4-6-0 "EASTNOR CASTLE" built at Swindon in June 1946. Its first shed allocation was Gloucester but by August 1950 it was to be found at Old Oak Common at which shed it was still allocated in 1955 and 1959. It moved to Worcester circa 1960. Its last shed allocation was Reading and it was withdrawn from there in January 1964 and scrapped the following month at Swindon.£500
338LMSR FRAMED SIGNALLING DIAGRAM FROM ROWSLEY DOWN SIDINGS № 2 SIGNALBOX showing all points and signals with numbers corresponding to the lever frame numbers. The box was opened by the LMSR in September 1928 in connection with expansion of Rowsley down sidings, it was a MR Type 4e design and closed in August 1964. The diagram is dated 1928 and measures 42” x 16½” in the original plain wooden frame. A little foxing and edge mould, the glass lost a long time ago. Nevertheless, a rare item from this long-gone freight facility.£200

Glen Tanner on the carriage print and Glen Tanar on the current Ordnance Survey map, is a side valley running south-west of the River Dee from Aboyne. The image looks up to Glen Tanar house with the Forest of Glen Tanar all around. Until 1965 all the Deeside communities between Aberdeen and Ballater enjoyed their own branchline, notable after 1958 for the only experiment by British Railways with a battery passenger train-set.  A HQ file copy in excellent condition with the usual repaired perforations in margin. In an original-style glazed wooden frame.£60

354LNER “NORTHERN BELLE” leatherette letter writing set from the first Northern Belle Land Cruise in June 1933. Maroon leatherette covers opening out with blotting paper, an unused headed letter and a “With Compliments” card. Inside the covers are pockets in which to store further writing materials. Front shows LNER coat of arms and company name with “Cruise of the Northern Belle” in top corner, both in gold. Inside flap shows stamped legend “First British Train Cruise June 1933” also in gold. 9” x 12” in VGC and very rare.£480

357SHEDPLATE: 71A EASTLEIGH (1950 – September 1963). This ex-LSWR shed housed eleven “King Arthurs” and eight “Lord Nelsons” among its 1950 allocation of 140 locos. By the time it changed code to 70D in 1963, fifteen “West Country” Pacifics were present out of a total of 100 locos. Closure to steam came in July 1967. Repainted front, the back in ex-loco condition. The BR(S) triangle is clearly cast into the back.£160
358GREAT EASTERN RAILWAY Tyer’s one-wire, two-position mahogany cased BLOCK INSTRUMENT, the large glazed front window showing twin needle positions for Down Train and Up Train. Twin plungers below this, one red, one white, with large flap to prevent the wrong plunger being used and another smaller brass reminder flap, with “Train on Line” and “Train Passed.” A small plastic plate bears the name “Whittlesford.” From the ex-GER Bishops Stortford – Cambridge line. 365LONDON & NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY wooden cased Thompson manufactured BLOCK INSTRUMENT with two circular glazed face dials showing “Train on Line”, “Line Clear” and “Line Blocked.” Three position rotary Bakelite dial at base with brass plate and a small tapper. A Dymo plastic label reads “To Holloway South Up.” Holloway South Up was a 40 lever GNR Type 2 signal box located at the southern end of the East Coast Main Line which was closed in May 1976. 11¾” x 9½” base, 18¾” high. 367CERAMIC LACE PLATE showing a coloured vignette at the centre of “THE BRIGHTON & ROTTINGDEAN SEASHORE ELECTRIC RAILWAY.” A 9” diameter china plate with wavy edges and brown ribbon threaded through the gaps at the edges, most popular as holiday souvenirs at seaside resorts in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Otherwise known as the “Volks Tramway” this weird and wonderful tramway ran along the seashore (and through the sea) between Brighton and Rottingdean on the South Coast. This was an extension of the original line which opened in 1883. The line was subjected to continual storm damage by the sea, which caused its eventual demise in January 1901. The one car that operated the line was officially named “Pioneer” but unofficially known as “Daddy Longlegs.”£20
368ALUMINIUM WORKSPLATE: “BRITISH RAILWAYS CREWE BUILT 1961 Power Equipment by Sulzer and Crompton Parkinson Ltd” from a Type 4 1Co-Co1 Class 45 “Peak” loco D62, later 45143. New to 17A Derby in March 1962, it was named at a special ceremony at St. Pancras station in November 1964, “5TH ROYAL INNISKILLING DRAGOON GUARDS.” A later plate was added in June 1985 at a ceremony in Waterloo station, “1685 – 1985” to mark the tri-centenary of the regiment. Withdrawn from TI Tinsley in May 1987, it was cut up at MC Metals Glasgow in March 1994. The number 45143 has been scratched and painted on the back. Rectangular 13” x 6½” front repainted in rail blue, the back original. Note: small hairline crack around one of the bolt holes.£200

Entered service at Parkeston Quay (30F) in March 1953, withdrawn from Allerton (8J) in July 1968 and sold to NCB at Kiveton Park. Finally withdrawn and broken up on site in November 1985. 383ENGRAVED BRASS WORKSPLATE: “№ 2093 DARLINGTON 1949” as carried by Worsdell designed J72 class 0-6-0T № 69012 one of twenty-eight  built by BR to an NER design of 1898. In its early days it was surprisingly allocated to Ipswich with 69013 but then moved north of the border to Scotland. Withdrawn from Thornton Junction in February 1961 and scrapped at Cowlairs Works in the April. Oval, 12” x 6¼” the front lightly polished only, the back in ex-loco condition with the letter “L” chalked on to indicate that it was from the left hand side of the loco.£480
384BR(E) ELECTRICAL INDIVIDUAL FUNCTION SWITH in metal cabinet with wooden front and Bakelite switches allowing release of trackside equipment for local operation (an example is “Mountnessing Ground Frame Release”). Two rows of six switches, some with illuminating bulbs, all with trafolite descriptions for “Up Southend Line” and “Down Southend Line.” This console was installed in 1961 in Shenfield signal box, a 1933 built L&NER Type 11b design fitted with 130 lever LNER Standard frame which closed in May 1981 being replaced by a new panel box. 17” wide, 17½” tall, 13” deep, in original condition.£30

400LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: “CROSS COUNTRY VOYAGER” from a Class 43 “HST” power car 43013. A special ceremony at Edinburgh Waverley station on 25th February 1996 saw this Virgin power car named by the Mayor of Penzance. This PR exercise to publicise a new service also saw 43065 named “City Of Edinburgh.” The plates were later removed, and 43013 is now operated by Network Rail, sporting a distinctive all yellow livery. The nameplate measures 41” x 10” repainted front, the back in ex-loco condition. Together with a badge in the shape of a winged “V” on an oval background measuring approx 14½” x 10½” in ex-loco condition. (2)£950

New to Llanelly but by the beginning of 1948 was resident at Neath Court Sart shed from where it was withdrawn in April 1962. Scrapped by the Central Wagon Co at Ince in the following October. Face repainted with silver numbers, the back in ex-loco condition with the painted inscription “Caerphilly” in common with the many other locos that received maintenance at those works.£290
407SHEDPLATE: 64F BATHGATE (1949 – August 1966). This ex-NBR shed was home to around 40 locos in the 1950s. By 1965 this number was down to just 14, which included celebrity J36 65243 “Maude.” Repainted front and back.£75
408LANCASHIRE & YORKSHIRE RAILWAY wooden cased BLOCK INSTRUMENT with two glazed dials showing “Train on Line” and “Line Clear” for trains “Sent” and “Received” and a large brass knob with central plunger. The initials “L&YR” and serial number “962” are stamped on the top. Unfortunately, all identification plates have been removed, but a piece of paper inside states that it came from Liverpool Exchange Junction. Exchange Junction signal box was a 60 lever signal box located on the approaches to Liverpool Exchange station. It was opened by the LM&SR in 1941 replacing the previous box destroyed by the Luftwaffe a year earlier, and closed in July 1969 when the absolute block section was extended to between Liverpool Exchange № 1 and Sandhills. 13” x 7” base, 18½” tall. Good ex-box condition.£95

414FLAMECUT CABSIDE NUMBER: 31404 with TOPS data panel below the number. This Type 2 A1A-A1A Class 31/4, formerly D5605 was new to 34B Hornsey in April 1960, built by Brush as works № 205. Renumber 31404 in March 1974, it was withdrawn from CD Crewe Diesel Depot in March 1991 and taken to Doncaster works . It was finally cut up by Booths Rotherham in March 1994. In rail blue, ex-loco condition, 28½” x 24” with neatly trimmed edges.£160
415GREAT CENTRAL RAILWAY wooden split-cased BLOCK BELL. Black Carr Junction signal box was located south of Doncaster where the GN&GE Joint line from Lincoln joined the East Coast Main Line and closed in August 1977 when signalling passed to a panel in Decoy № 1 signal box. 10” x 9” base, 8½” to top of bell. Good, ex-box condition.£75
416SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE: 63879 as carried by Robinson Great Central design 2-8-0 built by the North British Locomotive Company in July 1919 for the ROD but one of those rebuilt by Thompson from 1944 with 100A (B1) boilers, Walschaerts valve gear and new cylinders and reclassified O1. Numbered 6288 by the LNER, then in 1946 № 3879 and it became 63879 under BR. In 1955 it was based at Annesley but at the time of its withdrawal July 1965  was shedded at Staveley. Scrapped by A. Draper at Hull in September 1965. The back bears the casting number 17281D and also shows the loco classes with the same radius smokebox doors. Repainted front, the back in ex-loco condition.£400
417LIVERPOOL STREET DINING CLUB ½-PINT SILVERPLATE COFFEE POT manufactured by Elkington. 3¼” diameter base, 4¾” tall, plus handle and spout, the wording “Liverpool St Dining Club” are clearly incised on the side. The Dining Club was a “Staff Only” restaurant, bar and gymnasium for the staff working at the station which included headquarters staff. It was located in the abandoned tunnel connecting platforms 1 and 2 of the main Liverpool Street station to the Metropolitan Line. The tunnel was never used for the through passenger services that were envisaged and it was demolished in the mid-1980s when Liverpool Street station was rebuilt. Good condition.£30
418GREAT EASTERN RAILWAY Tyer’s mahogany cased BLOCK INSTRUMENT with glazed twin-needles for “Up” and “Down” lines. Finished in green with black lettering there has been some degradation of the paintwork and the dial has been modified at a later date with paper stickers. Below the glazed aperture is an enamel plate showing “Saffron Walden.” Also present is another circular glazed dial and a plunger. Saffron Walden signal box was a GER Type 7 design located on the GER Audley End to Bartlow line which was closed as a through route in December 1964. It is likely that the instrument from Bartlow Junction, an 1891 built GER Type 7 design fitted with a 39 lever Saxby & Farmer frame which closed in April 1966. 11½” x 6½” base, 18½” high in good ex-box condition. The instrument is attached to a wooden board which once housed the block bell or gong above it.£1300

425LOCOMOTIVE NAMEPLATE: QUEEN ELIZABETH II as carried by the BR Bo-Bo 6090HP 25Kv AC overhead class 91 loco 91029 built at Crewe to Lot No 1517 entering traffic in January 1991. Named “QUEEN ELIZABETH II” at a ceremony at Kings Cross in June 1991. The nameplates were removed in April 1997 and name reapplied in stick-on lettering at Doncaster in November 1999. Went to ADtranz in August 2002 when the name disappeared. Outshopped as 91129 in October 2002 and name reapplied in stick-on letters at Bounds Green. Thought to be the only loco ever named by the monarch with his/her own name. Stainless steel with etched black lettering and border, 39” x 6” in excellent condition displayed on a walnut board.£2400

427NER ORIGINAL GOLD LEAF COAT OF ARMS on green painted board showing the company device with the words “North Eastern Railway” below. This is the larger version as used on locomotives and is therefore scarcer than the usual examples offered. 27” x 30” and in good condition.£45
428TYER’S SINGLE LINE HOOP complete with leather pouch marked “2 – 57” and containing a brass SINGLE LINE KEY TOKEN for the section “Winston – Broomielaw” the section names being engraved onto a brass label. The hoop is sheathed in leather. This token section was located on the NER Darlington to Barnard Castle line which closed west of Forcett Junction in April 1965. 18” long, hoop 12½” diameter. Good ex-section condition with operational wear and tear.£420
429BR(M) WAITING ROOM PRINT: “THE CONWAY VALLEY” taken from a poster by Wootton showing a two-car Derby “Lightweight” DMU passing through the valley. Housed in a plain wooden frame, 25” x 33” (frame size), the print varnished for protection and in VGC.£100
430TOTEM: FRESHFIELD. BR(M) fully flanged maroon in VGC with deep colour and shine, some minor edge chipping at base and a little flange rusting only. Four neat and original face drilled holes for wall fixing. From an ex-L&YR Liverpool – Southport line station , opened April 1854, still open today. A scarce totem offered only twice previously in this format at auction.£350

432LNER ENAMEL LAMP TABLET: LNER STATION in cream with brown lettering and border. Recovered from one of the stations on the Blane Valley line between Kirkintilloch and Killearn closed in October 1951. 16” x 5” in good ex-station condition, but with some enamel loss around the top mounting holes. An unusual sign in this format.£320
433BRASS WORKSPLATE: “LMS BUILT G.W.R. 1945” as carried by Stanier Class 8F 2-8-0 8475 built at Swindon to the order of the Railway Executive Committee under Lot 165 and initially loaned to the GWR.  Transferred to LMS stock in May 1947 and became BR 48475 at Nationalisation. Withdrawn from Oxley shed in October 1966 and scrapped at Cashmore's, Great Bridge, in the following April. Oval, 10½” x 6” restored face, the back original. The number “8475” and the letters “LMS” are clearly stamped on the back.£550
434GWR HOTELS SILVERPLATE BREAD BASKET manufactured by Walker & Hall. Oval shape, 9½” x 5½” base with two cut out carrying handles. The initials “GWR” in roundel plus “Hotels” in scroll below it are clearly incised on one side. VGC.£85
435LNER/BR(E) small TELEPHONE SWITCH BOX with labels showing “Central Control”, Knebworth” and “Liverpool Street.” Exact purpose unknown, but thought to be a “Control Circuit” switch. 8½” x 7¼” at base, 7” tall. From an ex-GNR East Coast Main Line location in good condition.£30
436CHINA RAILWAYS CAST IRON WORKSPLATE 1959 as carried by a standard gauge China Rail JS class 2-8-2 built at Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Workshops in October 1959 and probably one from the late 56xx or early 57xx number series. The JS Class were built from 1957 to 1988 and in all over 1900 were constructed. Target shape, 24” x 12” in ex-loco condition on both sides.£150
437NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY CAST IRON WAGON PLATE: “BUILT YORK 1907 TO CARRY 25 TONS.” Oval, 8” x 4⅝” restored both sides to VGC.£40
438LONDON & NORTH WESTERN RAILWAY (MR Pattern) wooden cased BLOCK INSTRUMENT. Glazed window with dial with “Train on Line”, Line Clear” and Line Blocked” positions. Below the glazed window in an ivorine label “Fast Line Ordsall Lane № 4”. The handle had been modified by taking out the handle. The instrument is from either Ordsall Lane № 2 signal box or Cross Lane Junction signal box. Ordsall Lane № 4 signal box was an 1885 built 92 lever L&NWR signal box located at the west end of Ordsall Lane sidings in Salford which closed in October 1978 when signalling passed to Deal Street signal box. Base 10¾” x 6½” and stands 18½” high. Restored to VGC.£75
439DOUBLE-ROYAL POSTER: “HEALTHFUL HARTLEPOOL” a non-railway poster except for the mention of Excursions by Road & Rail to local places of interest. A colourful c.1920s poster with vignettes of the town’s historical and geographical features. Hartlepool is also famous for “The Most Beautiful Sea Air in the Kingdom”, and “The Durham Heath & Holiday Resort” amongst other promotional themes. It is also now even more famous for the “Tall Ships Race” which was held there in August this year. The poster is in good condition apart from some mould at the base which was suffered during storage in a damp place. Housed in a modern frame 26½” x 30”.£150
440TOTEM: ALREWAS. BR(M) fully flanged maroon in excellent condition with deep colour and shine, minor flange rusting only. An ex-LNWR station on the Burton-on-Trent to Lichfield City line opened in April 1849, closed in January 1965. A rare example only three times at auction previously.£500
441CARRIAGE PRINT: LEISTON ABBEY SUFFOLK by F W Baldwin from the LNER post-war series 1948 – 1955. A view of the ruined abbey which was founded in 1182 by Ranulf de Glanville, Lord Chief Justice to Henry II. In 1363 the Abbey was transferred to Leiston, and its patron, Robert de Ufford, 1st Earl of Suffolk, devoted his last years to the building. The only remains of the old site are the ruins of the Abbey chapel. Mint condition and in an original type glazed wooden frame.£80
442GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY COPPER LETTERBOX with the wording “Architects Department” engraved and filled in white on the plate above the letterbox. The intertwined lettering “GWR” in engraved white is on the letterbox flap itself. 20” x 8½ in original condition. A very unusual piece.£900
443ALUMINIUM WORKSPLATE: “MANUFACTURED AT CREWE 1988 British Rail Engineering Limited” (with “BRE and double-arrow symbol at centre) from a 25kV AC OHLE Bo-Bo Class 90 loco in the number series 90001 to 90018. Oval, 9½” x 5¼” restored face to VGC, the back in ex-loco condition.£80
444LNWR. A wooden-cased Fletcher’s twin-needle BLOCK INSTRUMENT. The glazed display shows “Up Line” and “Down Line” with a dial and tapper below. Unfortunately, there are no identification plates to tell us where it was located. 11” wide, 25” high, in VGC, complete with the wooden plinth which accommodates the bell below the main body.£160
445TOTEM: LONG BUCKBY. BR(M) fully flanged maroon in fairly good condition with good colour and shine, two or three small face chips and a little flange rusting only. An ex-LNWR station between Rugby and Northampton, opened February 1881, still open today. A scarce totem.£500
446LNER “CORONATION PATTERN” SILVERPLATE TUREEN with two compartments manufacture by Walker & Hall. Rectangular with curved corners, 11” x 8” with the initials “LNER” in stylised form incised at the central division. A little wear and tear only.£70
447SHEDPLATE: 12C PENRITH (1935 – October 1955); then WORKINGTON until February 1958; then CARLISLE CANAL until June 1963; and finally BARROW until December 1966 for steam; total closure in 1977. Ex-LNWR Penrith housed 6 locos; ex-LNWR Workington 30; ex-NBR Carlisle Canal 40 including 4 elusive A3s; and finally ex-FR Barrow just 20. Some diesels allocated to this shed also carried the code. Good, ex-loco condition both sides.£140
448TYER’S № 6 FIBRE SINGLE LINE TABLET: “WICKHAM – KNOWLE JUNCT 29” from the LSWR Butts Junction to Knowle Junction line until January 1957 when Wickham signal box closed and the line between Knowle Junction and Droxford was then worked as a siding. Very good ex-section condition.£75
449GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY – EAST LINCOLNSHIRE copper cased STATION LAMP. Three sides glazed, one of which opens, the base is also glass. 6” x 6” base, opening to 17” x 17” with floral corners. The top lights which would originally have been frosted, have been painted over in white. Overall height 30”. Stamped “GNR – EL” on the chimney and on the back wall. One of two lamps that stood at the entrance to Louth station which closed to regular services in October 1970. VGC.£190
450LNER SIGNALBOX BOARD: “NEVILLE HILL WEST.” This was a NER Type S3 design box located on the NER Leeds to Hull line which closed in October 1968 when signalling at Neville Hill passed to Leeds panel box. Wood with metal letters, 80” x 10½” in good, ex-box condition.£220
